This class "A" drop-in allotment, Raleigh's last available vacant commercial FM frequency, signed on July 1, 1998, as WWND "Smooth Jazz 102.9 The Wind". This handle and format were a carbon copy of one found at 103.9 FM, then known as WNND, in the early and mid 1990s. As with the original, it didn't fare too well in the ratings. At around 5 p.m. on January 26, 2001, WWND's smooth jazz format was abruptly "Gone with the Wind" to make way for an all-eighties music format. "Star 102.9", with new call letters WWMY, followed a national trend at the time of eighties-music stations. A few weeks later, 100,000-watt country station WKIX, 96.9 FM, became WYMY, giving a boost to the 6,000-watt WWMY with a simulcast down east. The new "Star 96-9 and 102-9" spent the next two years going from 80's oldies to hot adult contemporary and finally classic hits. On March 7th, 2003, WYMY broke from the simulcast to go Spanish as "La Ley 96.9". Meanwhile WWMY has continued with their classic hits until noon on February 10th, 2005, when the station became oldies-formatted "Y 102.9". On February 1st, 2007, the station began simulcasting its oldies format on WWNF, 102.3 FM in Goldsboro.
