WZAX was born in 1997 at 99.7 on the dial and aired a hot adult contemporary format at its sign-on as "New Mix 99-7". In 2003, the station began to lean more towards classic hits as, first, "Zax 99-7" and later "Zax 99-3" after their August 2005 frequency shift to 99.3, part of the reallocation/move of WFXQ 99.9 FM(now WCMC-FM) in Chase City, Virginia to Creedmoor for coverage of Raleigh-Durham. In August 2007, WZAX shifted to rhythm and blues oldies as Jammin' 99. WZAX is owned by First Media, who bought the station from MainQuad Communications in 2003.
