This former small town FM was known as WENC-FM when it signed on February 21st, 1962, the FM sister station of Whiteville's WENC 1220 AM. In 1980, WENC-FM became WQTR "Q-99" and kept the calls until a move to Fayetteville in 1986, following an upgrade to 100,000 watts with an urban format as WZFX "Foxy 99". The station later used the handle "99-1 The Fox" for a while before returning to their old handle and logo in the late 1990s. In January of 2 WZFX became the first Fayetteville market station to broadcast in HD Radio. "Foxy 99" is the market leader in Fayetteville and regularly shows up in Raleigh-Durham ratings as well as in other surrounding markets such as Wilmington and Myrtle Beach.
