I wrote all of these poems as a experiment working in a persona of a small child for a creative writing class. I liked they way they turned out (and thankfully, so did the teacher), and I hope you like them as well.

Trees After Glasses

Once you were
Fluffy
Like cotton candy
And blotched green
Like someone spilt
Zillions of melted crayons up there

And now
This bit of glass
Makes you sharp
And less
Friendly

Every piece is a jagged edge
And you frighten me
With your sharp
Limbs
And yet
They say you never changed

Did you?

Untitled

Why does the sky cry?
When things are bright and gay
All the sudden the sky turns gray
And little tears fall down
From the houses in the sky

Why does the wind sigh?
When the day is warm and sweet
And grass feels cool under bare feet
The wind picks up and titans sigh
From their perches in the sky.

Why do the leaves roll by?
When the song of plants is sung
All the sudden leaves are shunned
From the ruthless branches cackling madly
Leaves rumble, tumble by

Why does the sun lie?
When it was playing just fine
Hiding so fast should be a crime!
For now I am wet and in very much trouble
Tracking mud in on a carpet void of color

Why does it storm so nigh?
When the sun was out but a moment ago
Before the heavens opened up to blow
And tears of angels sent to grounds
Cried from high above me, but why?

Spelling Bee

I never much liked bees.
They sting too much
And besides
I can’t understand
Those spelling rules.

See,
The i’s and e’s:
There’s the i before e
Except after c
So does
“The i’s an e’s” phrase
Have to be
The e’s and i’s
Cuz it’s after “see”?

(sigh) I think I’ll go do geometry
This spelling stuff is not for me.
