Secret Family Recipes: Side Dish From The Place That Put The Spirit In Soul Food
(New York-WABC, November 27, 2002) — Thanksgiving is just hours away, and so we continue our "Secret Family Recipes" series. Today we're getting the scoop from the place that puts the spirit in soul food. Lauren Glassberg visited Sylvia's in Harlem, and got Sylvia herself to teach us how to make "Sassy Rice."

Here's what you will need:

*	6 cups of white rice
*	1 tablespoon vegetable oil
*	3/4 cup of chopped onions
*	3/4 cup of chopped green bell pepper
*	1/2 cup of shredded carrot
*	1 cup barbecue sauce
*	1 tablespoon of seasoned salt
*	2 tablespoons of egg yellow food coloring

Once you get all the ingredients together, here's what you do:

1.	Cook rice
2.	In a large skillet, heat the oil over medium high heat.
3.	Add onions, bell pepper and carrots and cook, stirring, for 4-6 minutes, until soft.
4.	Add sauce, seasoned salt and black pepper
5.	Add rice and egg yellow food coloring and cook, stirring until all the ingredients are combined and the rice is heated through.
