My Bicycle

... is a recumbent built by HP-Velotechnik in Germany, model Street Machine GT.
I am quite satisfied with my bike. Though it would be probably easier to go on a "normal" bicycle, I never thought to change.
I try to list its parts here. And to note how long they last and to tell a bit about my break downs.

WHEELS
front 20 ", rear 26 " more details

GEARSYSTEM
Rohloff Speedhub 500/14
14 gears integrated in the rear hub
first hub, 6500 km
Problems with gearshifting (6 of the 14 gears were jumping) in Turkey, finally I got a free replacement sent to Karmen, Iran
second hub, first transmission, 30000 km
Again the same problems with gearshifting in Malaysia after 22 month, I got a new transmission sent to Singapore (free)
second transmission, 8200km
... did not solve the problem
third transmission
In Australia I visited Rohloff Australia (nice people). The reason for the troubles had been found meanwhile, the transmission was changed again, no more problems since then.

STAND & RACKS
The stand was fixed on the lowriderack. This construction lasted only 1 week, then the aluminium piece on which the stand was fixed broke. For a while I used diffrent or no stands. Meanwhile I use a wood stick and fix the brakes with a rubberband on the handlebar.
The racks are made of aluminium, so the bags can rubb them away. I try to protect them with pieces of plastic tubes. They are very strong, on the lowrider I had already around 50 kilos luggage & water.
After 10000km broke the small tube on which the rear rack is fixed with 2 screws. It is welded on the big tube which carries the seat and looked also a little bit weak. In a small Pakistani workshop i it was easily fixed, they welded a rusty nail on it, to make it stronger, since then no problem.
After nearly 50000 km the lowrider finally broke on the whole in the central tube, where it is fixed to the bike with a screw. But of course I but a bit much weight on it before. I fixed it with 2 sticks of wood.
After a bit more than 50000 km the rear rack broke together with the axle of the rear suspension.
I thought quite good and therefore enough for aluminium racks. And got new ones sent out to Punta Arenas.

SEAT
The seat broke on the spot where the hip bone press against it after 9000km. I could cycle on several month till i found some epoxy resin and fiberglassmaterial to fix it. It lasted for a couple of month and broke again, also on other places. Though it is easy to fix with fiberglass and resin.

SUSPENSION

Rear Suspension
Shock: DNM Firestarter DV-22
The rear shock lost the oil inside on the rough dirt roads of West Tibet. I got a free replacement from the Taiwanese producer sent to nepal. There I changed also to a harder spring from 550 to 900 lbs/in.
Again loosing oil several times after riding rough roads. Probably just too much luggage.
Bought a new shock (same product) in Puerto Montt, Cile. Protected it this time with an old bicycle tube against dirt and water.
After more than 50000 km broke one bolt which fixed the axle of the rear suspension and the rear rack, too. It looked terrible. Got it fixed in an Argentine road construction camp, with rubber and wires, blocked the shock element with a piece of wood. This worked for a couple of hundred kilometers, till I had replacements sent out to Punta Arenas.

Telescop Suspension Fork Ballistic XL 410 AII
the suspension fork got rust and dirt inside (13000km). first i changed the bushes (20000km). after the second time in tibet one steel spring was broken and even the inner tube made of steel was worn out, so it move while using the front brake on steep downhills. but it was still possible to cycle with it.

"Custom Made" Front Suspension
I got in Beijing a new fork made, which works with rubber rings. A rickshaw factory did the job, according to building instructions developed by Werner from Germany. It is working well.
