Forever the Family Dog
Click, click that's how I knew
by the way your claws hit the floor
or else I'd hear a faint snort
while you rested on the sofa
keeping guard for intruders
or it be your powerful bark
that led me to know you were near
but in your gentle dark eyes
I saw such love.
You started as the little pup
black haired furr ball
and big nose to grow into
with this tiny yap
for future means to talk
trying to get use to all your new family
I also quite clearly recall
how you sharpened your teeth
with all those fun toys you loved to chew
while you soon learned the words
of Daddy, children, Mommy, num-num, good boy
and most importantly your name; Gybi.
Slowly, the days moved on
your coat went gray somewhere in there
and your beard grew whiter
but your right ear never stopped flopping down
nor did your bark fade
let alone your love for your family
as you grew in our hearts
because you were concieved in the Spring
the light in our big home
while you grew grayer still
and your body weakend
but never your loving heart.
Just last night after the sunset
he came to you in the night
whispering in your floppy ear
that it was time to move on
and you've done what you came to do
he then begin to sing a soft song to you
that made you ever so slowly close your eyes
lay your head down on your favorite bed
ease your breathing into a slow stop
and that's when the light in the house
dimmed so low.
Click, click that's how I'll know

still protecting and loving your family
