May's Fly Of The Month
The Elk Hair Caddis
Hook:     Dry fly size 12 to 18
Body:      Hare's ear dubbing
Hackle:    Medium to dark brown
Wing:       Light elk hair

Note: Thebody colours can be from tan to olive green depending on what is hatching at the time.
Also I sometimes will cut the fibers off of a CDC feather and dubb this onto the body of the caddis but do not use wet floatant this will gunk up the CDC fibers and ruin the fly. Use the powder base floatant on this fly

There are many different ways to fish this fly. On the Grand River in central Ontario the best way to fish this fly is a dead drift, not leaving any drag or these fish will refuse the take. While in Labrador fishing for speckle trout we had to have a slit wake to get the fish interested in our flys.Don't be a afraid to complete you drift if your fly happens to submerge. Some caddis will swim to the bottom of the river to lay their eggs so it is not uncommon for fish to see adult caddis submerged. I was on the Grand fishing for Browns and decided to stop fishing and talk to a fellow fisherman. I left my line out with the caddis submerged when to my surprise a 18 inch brown decided to slam my fly. From that day on if my fly submerges, I will always complete my drift
