ALL NIGHT
vVedder, Irons, Ament, Gossard, McCreadyv
ALBUM: No Code

Got all night
Plenty of time
Take these chains
From my eyes
So alive
Getting pride
Take her down
Before you die
Right .. be satisfied
We've got all night
Is he here?
Top of the stairs
No place for
The president
Build some fears
Slip outside
Fuck .. be content
To just get by
Why? be satisfied
We've got all night
Scream and wail
See who cares
Scream and wail
See who cares
Life has nothin' to do with
Killin' time
Oh well
Right .. be satisfied
We've got .. all night
We've got all night
We've got all night

NOTES: Jack Irons - drums .. Jeff Ament - bass .. Stone Gossard - guitar .. Mike McCready - guitar .. Ed Vedder - vocals .. produced by: Brendan O'Brien .. engineered by: Nick Didia/Brett Eliason .. mixed by: Brett Eliason

STONE: Date? At least 7 years ago. The second No Code session. Jack i think had toured with us for Vitalogy in Japan and Aus, and we were desperate to get in and record some track that had his original flavour. The session lasted only a week, and was marked most notably by the city of Chicago's weather. This was the summer where a large number of people were officially killed by the intensity of the Chicago heat and humidity. It was the most overwhelming feeling of moisture and heat that i have ever felt outstide of the the men's bathhouse. You would walk outside and be blasted by this wall of air that seemed unearthly [more like a moist mars]. We would go into this air conditioned studio and then walk back to our hotel, so we experienced it throughout the day. All Night was a groove that we played and were in the process of writing when Ed, late one night i'm sure, started layering on all these harmony vocals like we had never heard him do .. ? This at least was one of the first times he really experimented with multi-layering vocals, which seem to be an early percursor to songs like "Arc", etc .. i think this version is now a little more stripped down but that was the original feel and besides the intense warm wind of Chicago, what i remember about it the most. Oh yeah wasn't that the home of the Lurker .. ????
ED: It was 110 degrees and people were dying of heat stroke at such a rate they had to store them in ice cream trucks until there was enough room for them in the morgue, .. ahh, memories.

SAD
vVedderv
ALBUM: Binaural

All the photographs are peeling
And colors turn to gray, he's stayin'
In his room with memories for days, he faced
An undertow of futures laid to waste, embraced
By the loss of one he could not replace
And there's no reason that she'd pass
And there is no god with the plan, it's sad
And his holiness is proof, it's sad
He could only love you, it's sad
The door swings through a passing fable
A fate we may delay, we say
Holding on, to live within our embrace
He lit a match, he laid in bed
Hoping that dreams would bring her back, it's sad
And his holiness is proof, it's sad
He could only love you, it's sad
Holding his last breath, believing
He'll make his way
But she's not forgotten
He's haunted
He's searching for escape
If just one wish could bring her back, it's sad
And his holiness is proof, it's sad
He will always love you, it's sad

NOTES: Mitchell Froom - keys .. Matt Cameron - drums .. Jeff Ament - bass .. Stone Gossard - guitar .. Mike McCready - guitar .. Ed Vedder - vocals/guitar .. produced and engineered by: Tchad Blake .. mixed by: Brett Eliason .. also know as "Letter to The Dead" at one stage

DOWN
vVedder, McCready, Gossardv
ALBUM: Riot Act

Down .. fell by the wayside
no getting out
Oh down .. cry me a river
dried up and dammed
The names .. can be changed
But the place .. is still the same
I am loaded, told that all's for naught
holds me down
Rise .. life is in motion
I'm stuck in line
Oh rise .. you can't be neutral
on a moving train
One day .. the symptoms fade
think I'll throw .. these pills away
And if hope could grow from dirt like me
it can be done
Won't let the light escape from me
Won't let the darkness swallow me .. yeah!

NOTES: Matt Cameron - drums .. Jeff Ament - bass .. Stone Gossard - guitar .. Mike McCready - guitar .. Ed Vedder - vocals .. produced and engineered by: Adam Kasper .. mixed by: Brett Eliason .. Inspired by the writings of, and friendship with historian/activist Howard Zinn

MIKE: A song i wrote with Ed and Stone after seeing social distortion in LA.
ED: This was a Riot Act song, one of my favourites. It suffered from the "one thing is not like the other: syndrome, ..

IN THE MOONLIGHT
vCameronv
ALBUM: Binaural

In the moonlight
Gettin' .. why I ought to get back
It's a .. this day is sure to relapse
It's getting closer to opens
In the moonlight
Given two on the swings
A beautiful star .. I see
I wanna full sense of fear
In the moonlight
Fear .. it's a long draw nearer
Darkened days .. it's spent in
A night bird is following you all the time
Under a star lined ceiling
In darkness .. I see
All your senses revealed
In the moonlight
Fear .. it's the long draw nearer
Darkened days .. it's spent in
A night bird is following you all the time
It's the long draw nearer
Darkened days .. it's spent in
A night bird is following you
It's following you
A night bird is following you all the time

HITCHHIKER
vVedderv
ALBUM: Binaural

You fool .. dude what do what you think you're doing?
So you're lost .. my problem .. that's not
Conductor says, "Of of my train"
We understood .. guest/host relationships ain't my thing
Even if I could .. you aint the kind of person I would help anyway
I'm about to explode
'Cause I can't carry your load
Hitchhiker .. go .. hitchhiker
You're cool .. and cold in your calculations
We're friends .. only because of my situation
I'm about to unload
'Cause I can't carry your load
Hitchhiker .. go .. hitchhiker
Hitchhiker
So be gone .. too soon is too late
I dont want no delay
So be gone .. get your food off someone else's plate
Go tell all your friends
I'm an idiot and you're great
Hitchhiker .. hitchhiker
Now go .. hitchhiker .. go .. hitchhiker

NOTES: Matt Cameron - drums .. Jeff Ament - bass .. Stone Gossard - guitar .. Mike McCready - guitar .. Ed Vedder: vocals/guitar .. produced and engineered by: Tchad Blake .. mixed by: Brett Eliason

ED: Nature has it's own religion, .. evolution, baby
Where the deer and wild pigs run, there are plants along the trails that attach spiny seeds onto the legs of anything passing, .. soon the plants are spread for miles. Ingenious.
On a hike with my brother we were covered from knee to ankle in these things, .. he called them "Hitchhikers"
Also a nickname for professional who harangue you for autographs that they turn around and sell, otherwise known as "blue-penners"

STONE: Not bad. This was the first song i wrote and sang that was recorded by PJ. I think in New Orleans just before the Chicago sessions. I was growing a little frustrated with my song writing experience and had just wanted to write something that i could finish and say this is me take it or leave it. Well they left it .. but now it's back. Pretty good rock chorus actually. The verses are a little weak. I could have had a little more to say now that i had the mic but i was just starting out .. soon after we recorded "Mankind" and my career as a part time singer was flourishing .. eh?

ALONE
vVedder, Gossard, Ament, McCready, Abbruzzesev
ALBUM: Ten

Wide awake like snakes in a panic
Never woke up alone ever before
Had his woman long as he can remember
His to forget, but he can't, he can't ..
Out of bed and he dreams in the shower
She's standing naked, he's apologizing
Reaches for her and the water turns red, got
Woken up to be burned, burned, again ..
Go it alone
You got it, so it goes
Got his knees to his face
He can't take it any other way
On the streets he's a walkin', wounded
Having nothing, he's got nothing to say
Thoughts of suicide and alleviation
Anything to get his heart off of the coals
Go it alone
You got it, so it goes
Got his knees to his face
He can't take it for another day, yeah yeah ..
Wide awake and he shakes in a panic
Never woke up alone ever before
Had his woman long as he can remember
Sears to forget, but he can't, he can't ..

EDUCATION
vVedderv
ALBUM: Binaural

I'm questioning my education
Is my education more than I got?
While you're deciding .. I've been finding
Looking around in the here and now
If I can talk from the beginning
Would my fears now by where they are?
I'm questioning my own equation
Is my own equation relevant somehow?
The flags will wave and the news is breaking
See the man who can't pick out his own tie
If I've been taught from the beginning
Would my fears now be winning?
A wild world .. figuring out the answers
I'll be in my own dance and I ..
I'm questioning my education
Rewind and what does it show?
Could be .. the truth it becomes you
I'm a seed .. wondering why it grows

NOTES: Mitchell Froom - keys .. Matt Cameron - drums .. Jeff Ament - bass .. Stone Gossard - guitar .. Mike McCready - piano/guitar .. Ed Vedder: vocals/guitar .. produced and engineered by: Tchad Blake .. mixed by: Brett Eliason

ED: Matt, his family and i went to a far off place on vacation, .. the first two days we were writing and recording a song a day, .. then we remembered we were on vacation, .. "i'm a seed, wondering why it grows, .." sums me up.

ALBUM: Yield

Thought it was easy to fall in love but you you you
You're different, this much I know yeah you you you
It might be your guile, it could be your mind
It might be the way you take your time
Oh you you you
You, it's you, it's you you you
Oh you, it's you, it's you you you
I never know how much to say with you you you
I'd like to go deep but is it safe with you you you
It might be your needs, it could be your eyes
It might be the way you don't sympathize
Oh you you you
You, it's you, it's you you you
Oh you, it's you, it's you you you
You break laws and pay no fines
You get yours and then get mine
I thought it was easy to stay in love but you you you
You, it's you, it's you you you
But you, it's you, it's you you you

Exponentially serving
Perpetually unnerving
Vehicle swerving
The adjectives they are all a blurring
Freud walking the sidelines
Clipboard scoring the brain yeah
Black magic painted traits
Makes me sane
Hormones firing like a fifty foot Roman yeah
Please don't make me explain
Don't matter anyway
Phantom pain in my brain
It's all that's left of my leg
Black and Red and Yellow and Black and Red and Yellow
Heard you repeat a what ya heard
Me knowing the truth I can not concure na-na
Hormones firing like a fifty foot Roman yeah
Please don't make me explain

Hormones firing like a fifty foot Roman yeah

Hey fellas, have you heard the news?
[Oh yeah]
The women of this town are being misused
[Oh yeah]
I've seen it all in my dreams last night
[Oh yeah]
Girls leaving this town 'cause we don't treat 'em right
[Oh yeah]

Well, I'll take a train ..
[take a train]
Fly by plane ..
[fly by plane]
They're getting tired ..
[getting tired]
They're sick and tired ..
[sick and tired]

All you fellas better change your ways
[Oh yeah]
They're leaving this town in a matter of days
[Oh yeah]
Girls are good, you better treat 'em true
[Oh yeah]
Seen fellas run around with someone new
[Oh yeah]

I'm getting tired ..
[getting tired]
Sick and tired ..
[sick and tired]
They're leaving here ..
[leaving here]
All leaving here ..
[leaving here]

Are leaving here .. yeah, yeah, yeah ..
Leaving here .. been a while ..

The love of a woman is a wonderful thing
[Oh yeah]
The way that we treat 'em is a trying shame
[Oh yeah]
I'll tell you fellas, yeah, it won't be long
[Oh yeah]
Before these women, they all have gone
[Oh yeah]

They're getting tired ..
[getting tired]
Sick and tired ..
[sick and tired]
Well, I'll take a train ..
[take a train]
Fly by plane ..
[fly by plane]

They're leaving here .. yeah, yeah, yeah ..
Leaving here ..
Leaving, leaving .. oh, leaving here, now ..
Baby, baby, baby .. please don't leave here

NOTES: Jack Irons - drums .. Jeff Ament - bass .. Stone Gossard - guitar .. Mike McCready - guitar .. Ed Vedder: vocals/guitar .. produced by: Pearl Jam .. engineered and mixed by: Ed Brooks .. High Numbers cover

ED: Recorded for the Home Alive compilation record to fund women's self defense courses for cheap after the loss of Seattle musician Mia Zapata from the Gits, .. had an idea for a video that we never used, .. small party, band playing, kind of a mod scene. Drunk men harassing the girls, .. the end shot was to be an infinite line of women on their verspa scooters exiting into the horizon.
MIKE: We are always talking about who takes the first lead when we play live. Kick ass!!

GREMMIE OUT OF CONTROL
vHaskellv
ALBUM: Music For Our Mother Ocean Vol. 1

Every beach has a clown who thinks he knows it all
Hang-ten outta Santa Fe when surf comes out tomorrow lets go!
And he's always practicing his cowabunga call
Cowabunga!
But he'll never scramble when the big waves start to roll
Wsssshhhh ..
Cause there's nothing worse than a gremmie out of control
Gremmie out of control
There's nothing worse than a gremmie out of control
The kids always know that gremmie's talk is cheap
Ride the Hula-Han over the pipeline bonsai to the saddle bowl
Oh they just try to ignore this ugly creep
Cowabunga!
His board is always full of dings
Cause he's always doing stupid things
And there's nothing worse than a gremmie out of control
Gremmie out of control
There's nothing worse than a gremmie out of control
Gremmie out of control
There's nothing worse than a gremmie out of control

NOTES: Brendan O'Brien - guitar .. Jack Irons - drums .. Jeff Ament - bass .. Stone Gossard - gremmie vocals .. Mike McCready - guitar .. Ed Vedder: vocals .. produced and mixed by: Brendan O'Brien .. engineered by: Nick Didia

ED: Brendan O'Brien, the prince of surf guitar. Originally recorded for the Mother Oceans record benefiting the Surfrider Foundation. They do important work and are a great group. They can be looked up at www.surfrider.org

WHALE SONG
vIronsv
ALBUM: Music For Our Mother Ocean Vol. 3

The sun was in clouds
The sun looked out
Exposed a trail of mist and spouts
Ships followed the ancient lead
Deceiving friends under the sea
Wow, imagine that? They won't fight back
I got a theory on that
A whale's heart is as big as a car
A whaler's thought must be smudged by the dark
They won't fight back
I'm sure they know how
Means they love or are too proud
They won't fight back
I'm sure they know how
Means they love or too proud
They swim
It's really free
It's a beautiful thing to see. They sing
Hunters of land. Hunters of sea
Exploit anything for money
I refer to anybody that takes advantage of what that is free
They won't fight back
It's only a thought that makes it seem right
What you don't see is because of your sight
Take what you want
Kill what you can
That's just one way of the mind of man
Take their lives
Sell their parts but there is not taking of their hearts
If I was lost at sea
That harpoon boat in front of me
It's the whale I'd like to be
They won't fight back
They don't know how
They won't fight back

NOTES: Jack Irons - drums/guitar/vocals .. Jeff Ament - bass .. Stone Gossard - guitar .. Mike McCready - guitar .. Ed Vedder: vocals/e bow .. produced and mixed by: Brendan O'Brien .. engineered by: Matt Bayles .. another Surfrider track

ED: Jack Irons had heard that the heard of a whale was as big as a volkswagen, .. as if we weren't already in awe.

UNDONE
vVedderv
ALBUM: Riot Act

Last stop on the westcoast line
South of the northern border
One small corner on my mind
Everybody, they know me there
Don't get any second glances
Chances are that they don't care
The world has come undone
Like to change it everyday
Change don't come at once
It's a wave building before it breaks
Can't wait for election day
Witness the occupation
Corporations rule the day
Well you know the pendulum throws
Farther out to the one side, swinging
Has to sweep back the other way
The world has come undone
Another day and who can wait
Change don't come at once
It's a wave building before it breaks
All this hope and nowhere to go
This is how I used to feel .. but no more
The world has come undone
Like a game few you can play
Change don't come from one
It's a wave building before it breaks

NOTES: Matt Cameron - drums .. Jeff Ament - bass .. Stone Gossard - guitar .. Mike McCready - guitar .. Ed Vedder: vocals .. produced and engineered by: Adam Kasper .. mixed by: Brett Eliason

ED: There is a Matt Cameron song on Riot Act called "You Are", originally it was called "Undone", .. i ended up using that line in the chorus of this one and asked if i could steal his title, .. he obliged, but my song didn't make the record. We should have kept his his title and called this "Undone II"
This one sounds best in a car, ..it benefits from scenery passing at 40-60 mph [on the way to a demonstration of voting booth!]

HOLD ON
vVedder, Gossardv
ALBUM: Vs

I was doom riding on top a black horse
Whatever prize there was
I could only observe where the trouble starts
Where does it end?
I cannot be cured
Before it ends
I know life would be different if I held on
[held on]
I know I could be something if I held on
Gave her life away
Put it in my pocket when it should've been framed
Oh, it lost its shine
Gotta get this out of my head
Out of my brain
How could it end?
And like this
How could it end?
I know life would be different had I held on
[held on]
I know I could be something had I held on
[held on]
I know I could be something if I held on
[held on]
I know life would be different if I held on
[held on]
Held on
Held on .. if I held on
Held on .. if I held on
Held on .. if I held on

YELLOW LEDBETTER
vVedder, McCready, Amentv
ALBUM: Ten

Unsealed on a porch a letter sat
Then you said, I wanna leave it again
Once I saw her on a beach of weathered sand
And on the sand I wanna leave it again yeah
On a weekend I wanna wish it all away yeah
And they called and I said that I want what I said
And then I call out again
And the reason oughta' leave her calm I know
I said I know what I wear not the boxer or the bag
Ah yeah can you see them
Out on the porch yeah but they don't wave
I see them round the front way yeah
And I know and I know I don't want to stay
Make me cry
I see ooh I don't know why there's something else
I wanna go my own a way
Oh I said I don't I don't know whether I was the boxer or the bag
Ah yeah can you see them
Out on the porch yeah but they don't wave
But I see them round the front way yeah
And I know and I know I don't wanna stay at all
I don't wanna stay yeah
I don't wanna stay
I don't wanna stay
I don't don't wanna oh yeah ooh ohh

FATAL
vGossardv
ALBUM: Binaural

How good is he?
How warm are his eyes
You'll see it's not a reprise
Did he arrive
Too late and too tethered away
To put on his suit and his tie?
How good is he?
How warm is his heart
Or ego telling him which place to park
Did he relate .. the message is clearly hardly
Grounds for dismissal outright
Grounds for dismissal outright
I wake up and wait up
When anger's in fashion
I wake up and wait up
It echoes through the mansions
I wake up and wait up
When April's in May .. oh uh oh
I wake up and wait up
The answers are fatal
The answers are fatal
When I wait up and wake up
The answers are fatal
If he's truly out of sight
Is he truly out of mind?
If he's truly out of sight ..

NOTES: Mitchell Froom - keys .. Matt Cameron - drums .. Jeff Ament - bass .. Stone Gossard - guitar .. Mike McCready - guitar .. Ed Vedder: vocals .. produced, engineered and mixed by: Tchad Blake

ED: Stone brought this one in complete, words and all, the original chorus said "The answers in plato," a philosophy reference. Just couldn't get around it sounding like "Play-doh," hence the change. Tchad Blake's favourite, and it didn't make the record

OTHER SIDE
vAmentv
ALBUM: Riot Act

It's not the same without you up here
Can't find my wheels
Your absence is what breeds this fear
Warm breath and all it steals
You can't know how it feels to be in here
All the dark horse fields, befriendin' me
Playing ain't the same without you here
We've come to hate the golden rule
Cannot seem to make the dots connect
The morning light don't show you near
You can't know what it's like to bleed from here
The blackened world grows white, it goes nowhere
Oooh hoo ..
Death ain't the same without you, dear
I make the others run and hide
New York streets seem to make it worse
All this noise inside the quiet
I can't hold on, the weight you bear
My body's broken fast, please lift me up
You can't know what it's like to be inside
Your fading melodies can't beat my need
I'm not the same without you here
How can I quit to be there
Sit and stare
Stare ..
Begging for a prayer

NOTES: Matt Cameron - drums .. Jeff Ament - bass/guitar .. Stone Gossard - 2nd bass .. Mike McCready - guitar .. Ed Vedder: vocals .. produced, engineered and mixed by: Adam Kasper

JEFF: The one started off being for my Mom and Dad. They've been married for 42 years and they've been my biggest inspiration. Over the couple of years that i wrote and reworked it, it turned into me and P. Partnerships are hard, lifelong ones are just absolutely mind blowing. I probably pushed a little too hard trying to get this one on the Riot Act because it means a lot to me and i really fell in love with how spooky and weird the demo sounded, .. demo-itis was it's name-o.
ED: If life is a cruise ship and death is to disembark to another shore, then this song is what it's like to be on land while your partner remains out at sea.

Light your pillow .. lay back .. watch the flames
I'll tell a story .. no one would listen that long
It's hard to imagine .. it's hard to imagine ..
Tear into yourself .. count tales on your arm
Ah the beating .. tickin' like a bomb
After having seen all that they saw
It's hard to imagine .. it's hard to imagine ..
Things were different then .. all is different now
I tried to explain .. somehow ..
Things were different then .. all is different now
I tried to explain .. somehow ..
Things were different then, all is different now
I tried to explain .. I hope this works somehow ..
Things were different then .. all is different now
I tried to explain .. oh .. somehow ..

FOOTSTEPS
vVedder, Gossardv
ALBUM: Ten

Don't even think about reachin' me .. I won't be home
Don't even think about stoppin' by .. don't think of me at all
I did .. what I had to do
If there was a reason .. it was you...
Aah .. don't even think about gettin' inside
Voices in my head .. ooh, voices
I got scratches .. all over my arms
One for each day .. since I fell apart
I did .. oh, what I had to do
If there was a reason .. it was you
Footsteps in the hall .. it was you .. you .. oh..
Pictures on my chest .. it was you .. it was you ..
Hey .. I did .. what I had to do
Oh, and if there was a reason
Oh, there wasn't no reason, no
And if .. there's something you'd like to do
Just let me continue .. to blame you
Footsteps in the hall .. it was you .. you .. oh ..
Pictures on my chest .. it was you .. you .. oh ..

NOTES: Stone Gossard - guitar .. Ed Vedder: vocals/harmonica .. produced and mixed by: Rick Parishar .. engineered by: Rick Parishar/Brett Eliason

MIKE: Eddie's take on Stone's song. Also similar to "Times of Trouble" from Temple of the Dog

WASH
vVedder, Gossard, Ament, McCready, Krusenv
ALBUM: Ten

Oh please .. let it rain today
This city is so filthy .. like my mind in ways
Oh there was the time .. like a clean .. new taste
Smiling eyes before me .. inches from my face
Wash my love
Wash my love
Wash my love .. yeah ..
Sin the sale .. buying just a need
Oh who planted all the devils seeds
And what's the truth .. and the truth that lies at home
It's on the inside .. and I can't get it off, yeah ..
Wash my love
Wash my love
Wash my love .. yeah ..
What's clean is pure .. but hey .. I'm white on the outside .. though I stray
What she don't know today .. might kill us both tomorrow .. bring it back some way
Bring it back, back, back .. to the clean form .. to the pure form
Wash my love
Wash my love
Wash my love

NOTES: Dave Krusen - drums .. Jeff Ament - bass .. Stone Gossard - guitar .. Mike McCready - guitar .. Ed Vedder: vocals .. produced and engineered by: Rick Parishar .. mixed by: Brett Eliason

STONE: One of, if not our earliest, compositions written as a band in the Potato Head gallery basement .. maybe? Right in there for sure. It's on that three song sampler right? Hell how knows. This one was instantaneous in its formation. Along with release, i think we played it once and th lyrics were done. I could be confused of course, but it sound good. I love the anti guitar solo by Mike. He sort of rubs his strings and with minimal effort colours the solo section beautifully

DEAD MAN
vVedderv
ALBUM: Dead Man Walking Soundtrack

The settling of my every step, inching off of the earth
Is magnified by the things I've done
The thing that I've become
Every lift of my hand, coffee cup up and back
Is magnified by the things I've done
The things I've seen, the things I've caused
I'm a dead man walking
The hammer that I once brung down, now hovers over me
Cast a shadow, a cross onto me
The hallways are all mocking me
What I've become, they're all mocking me
I'm a dead man walking, a dead man walking
A dead man walking
I'm a dead man walking, dead man walking
Dead man walking

NOTES: Jack Irons - percussion .. Jeff Ament - bass .. Ed Vedder: vocals/guitar .. produced and mixed by: Brendan O'Brien .. engineered by: Nick Didia

STONE: New Orleans session for No Code. How this song didn't make it on that soundtrack [or for that matter our record] we will never know for sure, but i'm very proud to have it finally gets it's spot. I think some of my favourite Ed lyrics of all time, although at the time i think i thought with some seriousness [not a lot, but some] t should say "Dead man walking .. around" because of the way the last syllable would fall across the beat. Maybe one of my worst ideas ever. Sometimes i look back and cringe. This song should have never been a b-side.

STRANGEST TRIBE
vGossardv
ALBUM: 1999 Fan Club Christmas Single

It's five below in evidence
The winded eves and sideways snow
His eminence has yet to show
Follow the ageless tide
Follow the angled light
Follow the strangest tribe
I .. I .. I ..
It's 6:00 AM .. you're waiting for ..
You've had your feast .. you're wanting more
Follow the wayward mile
Follow the distant high
Follow the strangest tribe
I .. I .. I ..
Follow the ancient stripe
Follow the angels try
Follow the strangest tribe
I .. I .. I ..

NOTES: Stone Gossard - guitar/percussion .. Ed Vedder: vocals/piano .. produced by: Stone Gossard/Ed Vedder .. engineered and mixed by: Matt Bayles

STONE: I think this sounds so much better not on a 45. I love this little song of mine. The Christmas spirit really tool hold of me one November night, what, oh a few years back. I went into Litho and laid down the basics and asked Ed to come in and help. He sang it and recorded Drifting on the same day. I think the keys on "Strangest" is Ed too. I always thought there could even be some harpsichord

DRIFTING
vVedderv
ALBUM: 1999 Fan Club Christmas Single

Drifting, drifting, drifting away
I got myself a mansion .. then I gave it away
It's not the world that's heavy .. it's just the things that you save
And I'm drifting .. drifting away
Drifting .. drifting .. drifting along
I rid myself of worries .. and the worries were gone
I only run when I want to and I sleep like a dog
I'm just drifting .. drifting along
The suitcoats say, "There is money to be made"
They get so damn excited .. but I guess it's their way
My road it may be lonely just because it's not paved
It's good for drifting .. drifting away
All the suitcoats say, "There is money to be made"
They get so damn excited .. nothing get's in their way
My road it may be lonely just because it's not paved
It's good for drifting .. drifting away
Drifting .. drifting .. drifting .. uh huh
I feel like going back there .. but never for long
I sometimes wonder if they know that I'm gone
I'm just drifting .. drifting along
Drifting .. drifting along .. drifting .. drifting along

NOTES: Stone Gossard - guitar .. Ed Vedder: vocals/guitar/harmonica .. produced by: Stone Gossard/Ed Vedder .. engineered and mixed by: Matt Bayles

ED: I sometimes wonder why there isn't a tee-pees r us.

Flowered winds was where I lived
Thought you burned .. not froze for your sins
Oh I'm so tired and cold
Oh when I was a kid .. oh how magic it seemed
Oh please let me sleep .. it's Christmas time
Oh when I was a kid .. oh how magic it seemed
Oh please let me sleep .. it's Christmas time

Oh please let me dream .. it's Christmas time

LAST KISS
vCochranv
ALBUM: 1998 Fan Club Christmas Single

Oh where oh where can my baby be?
The lord took her away from me
She's gone to heaven so I got to be good
So I can see my baby when I leave this world
We were out on a date in my daddy's car
We hadn't driven very far
There in the road straight ahead
A car was stalled the engine was dead
I couldn't stop so I swerved to the right
I'll never forget the sound that night
The screaming tires the busting glass
The painful scream that I heard last
Oh where oh where can my baby be?
The lord took her away from me
She's gone to heaven so I got to be good
So I can see my baby when I leave this world
When I woke up the rain was pouring down
There were people standing all around
Something warm flowing through my eyes
But somehow I found my baby that night
I lifted her head she looked at me and said
Hold me darling just a little while
I held her close I kissed her our last kiss
I found the love that I knew I had missed
Well now she's gone even though I hold her tight
I lost my love my life that night
Oh where oh where can my baby be?
The lord took her away from me
She's gone to heaven so I got to be good
So I can see my baby when I leave this world

NOTES: Matt Cameron - drums .. Jeff Ament - bass .. Stone Gossard - guitar .. Mike McCready - guitar .. Ed Vedder: vocals .. produced by: Pearl Jam .. engineered and mixed by: Brett Eliason

STONE: Your biggest successes come from the most unlikely places. "Last Kiss" should be the Greek God of that notion. I don't mean success like popularity and sales, but in the fact that this song helped earn about 10 million dollars for Kosovo Relief. It's been told, but if you haven't heard it .. Ed found these two old 45's at a garage sale and thought they would be cool covers for our Christmas single. I had heard "Last Kiss" a lot as a kid and never thought it was all that cool, but i was in, and i'm sure we were already behind the gun to get this recorded so the Fan Club could get them shipped out by February. Anyway, we recorded the tracks at Constitution Hall in Washington DC during a soundcheck for a Voters for Choice Benefit that we were playing that night. Is that right? Who knows .. anyway, they sounded fine at the recording and i don't think i thought about them one way or another for months till i heard some radio stations [Philly i think] were playing "Last Kiss" and people loved it. Wow! I think right as there was this buzz we were asked to donate a song to the Kosovo Relief Fund record and we thought this might be perfect as people had already shouted the song's approval. Anyway, it was the most radio air play we ever got for a specific single release. It was our biggest song ever! .. in the eyes of the illusive radio chieftains, we had delivered! and just to think i thought it was kind of boring. It has become a staple in our set and now is one of my favourites. Recorded and mixed expertly on digital tape by our wonderful and talented Brett [Blass] Eliason for a couple grand. You never know ..

SWEET LEW
vAmentv
ALBUM: Binaural

Power high .. power low
You can take 'em all to school
You can fly .. wilt the stilt had nothing on you
Lambchops and afro do .. Milwaukee bucks and a barbecue
#33 just like you
Sweet Lew .. how could you?
Sweet Lew .. makin' me blue
A Laker trade their Bobby-D for a house .. a crew by the sea
a little help from 32 .. showtime .. and worthy
Those were the days .. pre investment spree
Sweet Lew .. is it true?
Sweet Lew .. how could you?
I grew up trying to copy you .. Bruce Lee .. and a kung-fu
Acta jazzman .. Yogi too
Little did I know .. a loose screw
But you had your own shoe
Build him high .. build him tall .. a taiku with a basketball
Tear 'em down .. one and all
7'2" is a long way to fall
Sweet Lew .. how's the view?
Sweet Lew .. how could you?

NOTES: Tchad Black - wurlitzer .. Matt Cameron - drums .. Jeff Ament - bass/vocals .. Stone Gossard - guitar .. Mike McCready - guitar .. produced, engineered and mixed by: Tchad Blake

JEFF: I loved - scratch - i idolized Lew Alcindor from 1970 until i met him in 1994. He was the abolute human being in my eyes .. that skyhook, getting to fight Bruce Lee in one of the "Dragon" movies, he was smart, mystical, and most important, he was 7'2". The day finally came and i introduced myself to him as one of his players in a dumb MTV basketball game and, with his complete lack of any reponse or interest, the bubble burst. I wanted to crawl under a rock, instead i wrote a song based on the urban myth that he lost all of his money investing in hotels for tall people. Anyway, i thought about that moment a lot, and wondered how many people i might have inadvertently snubbed because i was tired or just unable to speak .. sorry .. 5'11" is a long ways to fall.

Dirty Frank Dahmer he's a gourmet cook, yeah

Wanted a pass so she relaxed
Now the little groupie's getting chopped up in the back
I got a cupboard full of fleshy fresh ingredients
A very careful at the same time quite expedient
Eats meat, a release
Bus driving's harder on your head than on your feet
Dirty Frank
Dirty Frank, yeah
ah Dirty Frank
Dirty Frank, yeah
Keeps it clean a keeps it copaseptic
A little boys and girls their heads are all collected
A not crazy a per se
Just a little strange when he gets hungry
City, state, your town, he will continue
A stadium, tiny clubs, every venue
A his bus a your trust
There goes another turned into crust
Dirty Frank
ah Dirty Frank, yeah
ah Dirty Frank
ah Dirty Frank, yeah
Oh middle of the night we're stopped the freeway shoulder
A Frank's shovelling to bury the leftovers
A they're sunk he's drunk
Now he's gonna drive, I'm hiding in my bunk oh
The band all knows we're too afraid to mention
A don't want to be part of Frank's luncheon
A lose weight, a be safe
Where's Mike McCready?
My god he's been ate!
Dirty Frank
ah Dirty Frank, yeah
ah Dirty Frank
ah Dirty Frank, yeah
ah Dirty Frank
ah Dirty Frank, yeah
ah Dirty Frank
ah Dirty Frank, yeah
Why that Dirty Frank was a bad mother .. shut your mouth!
Hey man, I'm just talking about Dirty Frank
Ok, I think that's enough

BEE GIRL
vAment, Vedderv
RADIO BROADCAST: Rockline

Bee girl, you're gonna die
You don't wanna be famous, you wanna be shy
Do your dances alone in your room
Becoming a star will become your doom
Bee girl, be a girl ..
Bee girl, be a girl ..
You know time is long, and life is short,
Begin to live while you still can
Believe in nothing, believe me
Those who can be trusted can change their mind
The anxious is the present,
Unwrap your gifts, take your time
Everything you imagined, needn't be stuck in your mind
Bee girl, be a girl
Bee girl, be a girl
Thank you

NOTES: Jeff Ament - guitar .. Ed Vedder: vocals .. produced by: Westwood One Broadcast

JEFF: Ed and i were told to be at the studio on Capitol Hill around the release of Vs. to be interviewed for Rockline. I brought my guitar hoping to show everyone why i was the bassist .. two bottles of real cheap cabernet later[cuz the proceeds from Ten were in the pipeline], we were in the middle of our interview during a break when Ed asked if i "had anything," and if so,what key was "it" in .. so what you hear is the one time only version of a song we had constructed on the spot fueled by a couple of riffs, a page of notes, and the almighty red.
ED: Met her and her mother somewhere, .. she was ten or so? .. i was worried. I hope she's fine.

Instrumental

MIKE: This song caused an argument between Jeff and Stone back in the day. I put guitars all over it cause ed asked me to.
JEFF: I fricking loved this Stone riff in 1991 .. in fact, when Stone said he was over it and didn't want to play it anymore, i nearly quit the band [what a fucking baby i was] .. i do remember going out to the 7 foot hoop behind London Bridge where we were recording and dunking untilmy wrists were bleeding .. ahhh, passive aggressive rage .. make for some good rock 'n roll, my brother

So all you fools
Who sang just like him
Feel free to do so now
'cause he's dead
Using .. using .. using
The using takes toll
Isolation
Just so happy to be one
Sad to .. sad to think
Sad to think of him all alone
Lonesome friend .. we all knew
Always hoped you'd pull through
No blame .. no blame
No blame .. it could be you
Using .. you can't grow old using
So sing just like him .. fuckers
It won't offend him
Just me
Because he's dead

NOTES: 20th April 2002 was the date Layne Staley's deceased body was found .. hidden track commences 4:20 after Bee Girl

UNTITLED
vVedderv

She said to me, over the phone
She wanted to see other people
I thought, "Well then, look around, they're everywhere"
Said that she was confused ..
I thought, "Darling, join the club"
24 years old, mid-life crisis
Nowadays hits you when you're young
I hung up, she called back, I hung up again
The process had already started
At least it happened quick
I swear, I died inside that night
My friend, he called
I didn't mention a thing
The last thing he said was, "Be sound"
Sound ..
I contemplated an awful thing, I hate to admit
I just thought those would be such appropriate last words
But I'm still here
And small
So small .. how could this struggle seem so big?
So big ..
While the palms in the breeze still blow green
And the waves in the sea still absolute blue
But the horror
Every single thing I see is a reminder of her
Never thought I'd curse the day I met her
And since she's gone and wouldn't hear
Who would care? what good would that do?
But I'm still here
So I imagine in a month .. or 12
I'll be somewhere having a drink
Laughing at a stupid joke
Or just another stupid thing
And I can see myself stopping short
Drifting out of the present
Sucked by the undertow and pulled out deep
And there I am, standing
Wet grass and white headstones all in rows
And in the distance there's one, off on its own
So I stop, kneel
My new home ..
And I picture a sober awakening, a re-entry into this little bar scene
Sip my drink 'til the ice hits my lip
Order another round
And that's it for now
Sorry
Never been too good at happy endings ..

NOTES: hidden track on the Import version of Lost Dogs
