Bob Pridden 'The idea for Substitute grew from a recording session with Cast. We had been working in the studio for about two months and once we had finished work on their album, John Power suggested we record 'The Seeker' as a b-side for one of the singles. That weekend I took the track home and played it after dinner to my family. They loved it and we listened to it over and over again. Whilst talking with them about what my next project should be my daughter Lucy suggested that I record a whole album of Who covers. It was a great idea. The young bands I had been working with were always telling me what a great influence The Who had been to their careers and this was a great opportunity for them to give something back.
I made a list of bands and took the idea to Pete Townshend. Pete was up for it and said he would give permission to any band I thought were right to cover one of his numbers. So with his blessing I went to The Who's management and started work. Over the past year, in between tours, I talked to a lot of bands about taking part. Paul Weller was right behind me and when I talked to Steve Cradock of Ocean Colour Scene he was interested too. Before I knew what was happening everyone was calling asking what song they could cover.
During The Who's tour of the US last summer I had a chance to catch up with some American bands who I was really keen to involve too. My first step was to talk to Eddie Vedder who is a long time friend of The Who and things really began to tak off when David Bowie agreed to record 'Pictures of Lily'. We had tracks from Phish and Sheryl Crow and The Who's support band Unamerican signed up to do a number too.
The final acts came on board last November when The Who did a concert at The Royal Albert Hall in aid of The Teenage Cancer Trust. Amongst the guest artists who performed with them were Kelly Jones of Stereophonics and Noel Gallagher. They recorded a track in the studio for us and after the concert we decided to use the live version of 'Substitute' that Kelly Jones performed that night with the band.
At the end of the day Paul Weller may be the Modfather but The Who are The Godfathers and I want to thank them, as without the four of them, none of this would have been possible'

I don't mind other guys dancing with my girl
That's fine, I know them all pretty well
And I know sometimes I must get out in the light
Better leave her behind where the kids are alright
The kids are alright ..
Sometimes, I know I gotta get away
Bells chime, I know I gotta get away
And I know if I don't, I'll go out of my mind
Better leave her behind where the kids are alright
The kids are alright ..
I know if I go things would be a lot better for her
I had this plan but her folks wouldn't let her
I don't mind, I feel I gotta get away
Bells chime, I know I gotta get away
And I know if I don't I'll go out of my mind
Better leave her behind where the kids are alright
The kids are alright ..
