"Over one million Tibetans massacred in peaceful demonstrations .. starved .. shot .. sterilized .. tortured as prisoners of conscience .. silenced. "Even governments have recognized the immense power that music has to awaken the human spirit into action, and have violently repressed musicians and their right to free expression:
.. Tibetans are seeking –simply and humbly- to regain what is guaranteed to all peoples under the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights: .. Everyone has the right to: freedom of movement .. freedom of expression .. freedom of peaceful assembly .. freedom of thought .. freedom of conscience .. freedom of religion .. and .. No one shall be: tortured or degraded .. arbitrarily exiled .. subject to arbitrary interference with their privacy .. subject to arbitrary arrest .. held in slavery"
"People have always used the power of music to change themselves and the world around them: Milarepa, an eleventh century Tibetan saint, sang songs to teach people about compassion and nonviolence.
People in Tibet risked arrest and imprisonment to listen to a radio broadcast of this very concert. The performers at this show were threatened with being banned from China as a result of their stance on human rights"
The Tibetan Freedom Concert is ".. dedicated to the people of Tibet and all of those around the WORLD who continue the nonviolent struggle for freedom in the face of oppression"
