Shindou Hikaru gulped his breakfast in two bites and nearly choked. His mother gave him a hearty slap on the back, and chided him for his manners, then shook her head indulgently when he stood up, grinning, still red-faced and teary from the coughing, and said he would be back for dinner.
He pulled on his pair of yellow shoes—a bit old, but still wearable—called out a quick goodbye, slung up his bag and ran all the way down the street.
He was due to play with Honda Toshinori, and was delighted to meet Saeki at the Go Institute as well. They ate lunch together, after which Shindou went back to his game, and managed to beat Honda in mid-game.
After the game, he made for the familiar Go salon by the train station, played a game with Touya Akira, discussed it for thirty minutes, argued for a full twenty minutes, and competed to see who could solve ten tesuji in 100 Tesuji Problems For Advanced Players in the shortest time. Ichikawa brought them tea, which he drank too quickly, choked, again, and had Touya slapping him so hard on the back that it left a palm-sized bruise.
It was nearly evening when he and Touya walked through the park that led to his home. The autumn leaves were drifting off the branches, and under a shower of red-and-yellow maple leaves, Touya pulled Shindou against him and kissed him, and Shindou wrapped his arms around Touya, and kissed him back, and when they finally separated Shindou pulled a sunset-red maple leaf out of Touya’s hair.
They smiled.
