Sompong SarasapRed & Gold Gallery is proud to present the first North American exhibition of acclaimed Thai artist Sompong Sarasap, who was awarded a prestigious solo retrospective at the National Gallery in Bangkok last year. Sompong's work is pulled from his continuing dialogue with nature. In his "Tree Series," leaves become fractal elements of a larger tree. His "Hut Series," inspired by the simple straw huts of the northern Akhas hill tribes, features huts that appear organic and alive, as delicate tendrils from the straw thatch sprout and shoot upwards toward a moonlit sky.
For his exhibit "The Gift of Rice", Sompong focuses on the form and meaning of rice. For Sompong, the rice seed is the equivalent to the egg (symbol of birth) to the Western painter. Accordingly, he often incorporates soil or clay into his large-scale paintings and magnifies the humble rice grain to mythic proportions. ![]() ![]() |
