Rigger Ramblings

Game #35 - August 11, 2002 - Red Deer, AB - The Calgary Cardinals finished the round robin at 4-0, and the Riggers at 3-1.  The right to represent Alberta in Windsor, ON in 2003 was on the line.  And the bats of all nine hitters and the left arm of Aaron Graves made sure that next summer the Riggers would be able to have a shot at claiming their second National Championship.  The top of the order set it all up for the Riggers as Jason Fraser and Dwayne Lalor (4 hits each) went a combined 8-9 in the game.  The rest of the order had at least a hit each.  Graves worked out of trouble in the middle innings, and on each occasion, he made a big pitch, and the defense step up as well.  This was the Riggers' 13th Provincial Championship since the team's inception in 1981, and their 3rd in the last 4 years.

Game #34 - August 11, 2002 - Red Deer, AB - With the Riggers at 3-0 and playing the Championship game later that evening, it was a good game to let a few guys rest up and see what the Calgary Cardinals had to offer.  Jared Greenberg started on the mound went two innings.  Jay Steeves took over and went one, and Miki Kawahara finished up the game.  Brendon Mix collected two hits for the Riggers.  The Cardinals won the game 11-10.

Game #33 - August 10, 2002 - Red Deer, AB - With the Riggers heading into their third game of the Championship 2-0, and the St. Albert Tigers at 1-1, it was a must win for the Tigers.  The Riggers sent staff ace Marty Davis to the mound for this contest.  A win would put the Riggers into the Championship game on Sunday.  The Riggers fell behind early in the first, but answered the call as the promptly took the lead back in the top of the second.   The key blow was a three run blast by Jamie Duncan.   The Riggers scored another four in the third, two runs coming from the bat of Scott Murray; who also finished with three hits in the game.  Going into the sixth, the Riggers lead 12-4.  The Tigers tried to come back, but eventually ran out of outs, and punched their own ticket back to St. Albert.

Game #32 - August 10, 2002 - Red Deer, AB - Game #2 saw the Riggers square off against the unknown Lethbridge Diablos. Unfortunately for the Diablos, the unknown proved to be overwhelming as the Riggers scored 7 times in the first inning, and never looked back.  Aaron Tweet started for the first time on the mound this season after battling through elbow tightness for much of the season.  He went 5 solid innings, striking out six along the way.  Dwayne Lalor took over for the final two innings allowing 2 meaningless runs in the 7th.  Shane DeZutter and Jamie Duncan each hit two run bombs in the first. Jason Fraser, Curtis Bailey, Dwayne Lalor, Shane DeZutter and Jamie Duncan each had two hits for the Riggers who improved to 2-0 on the weekend.

Game #31 - August 9, 2002 - Red Deer, AB - The Riggers opened up the 2002 Provincial Championships against the host team, the Red Deer Stags.  Getting a victory in their opening game was of utmost importance.  Coach, Curtis Bailey sent Jeff MacDonald to the mound and he got the Riggers just that. MacDonald went the distance striking out 5 in the process.  The Riggers were lead at the plate by Jason Fraser, Paul Claerhout, and Jared Greenberg; each collecting 3 hits.  Shane DeZutter hit a two run shot in the bottom of the first inning.

Game #30 - July 28, 2002 - Edmonton, AB - The Sunburst Baseball League Championship game started out as a pitchers duel on both sides but it all unravelled in the bottom of the sixth inning for the Riggers.  Jeff MacDonald started for the Riggers and took and no-hitter into the fifth and in the bottom of the sixthe the tigers erupted for 7 hits and 4 in a row where a Tigers hitter had two strikes on him.  The lone Rigger run was driven in by Dwayne Lalor, and Shane DeZutter had two of the four Rigger hits.  The Riggers now have two weeks to prepare for the ultimate prize they can play for; the Alberta Championship, a prize they have won 12 of the 21 years they have been in existence.

Game #28 - July 16, 2002 - Red Deer, AB - Carrying the burden of a three game losing streak the Riggers decided to take it out against their cross-town rivals.  The same start as 24 hours earlier, Jared Greenberg lead the game of with a homerun and the Riggers would never look back.  It almost got out of hand in the second as the 'Big Red Machine' put a 10 spot on the board; at one time 8 hitters put together hits before the Stags somehow recorded an out.  Dwayne Lalor who went 7 innings threw strikes and the Stags knocked a few around the park, but the Riggers put two many runs on the board and all they were concerned about was getting outs.  The Riggers ran their winning streak against the Stags to 5-0 (one game was forfeited to...well we're still not too sure??).  Marty Robinson lead the way with 3 hits and 3 RBI, Brendon Mix hit his 2nd homerun of the season, and Shane DeZutter and Curtis Bailey also stroked 3 hits for the Riggers. Greenberg made a highlight real catch by the firstbase dugout, as he jumped onto the fence, hoisted himself up, and made what was one of the finer plays of the season.

Game #27 - July 15, 2002 - Edmonton, AB - After a long trip home from Kamloops, the Riggers found themselves on the road again this time heading north on Highway 2 to face the Edmonton Angels.  The visitors came out swinging as Jason Fraser lead off the game with a bomb to straight away centre on the first pitch.  After that however the Riggers were unable to mound any sort of consistent attack and did not give enough run support to starting pitcher Aaron Graves who went 7 innings.  They did take a 3-0 lead after 2 innings but gave three back in the fourth and played from behind the rest of the way as the Angels scored 2 in the fifth and went on to win 9-5.  Scott Murray had two hits in a losing effort.

Game #26 - July 13, 2002 - Kamloops, BC - In a loser out game the Riggers took on the Wenatchee (WA) Apple Sox.  The Riggers fell behind early and were forced to play catch up once again.  The defense did them in in the fourth; unable to field two bunts and another fly ball that dropped in put them behind 7-1.  The Riggers closed the gap to 7-4 in the sixth but were unable to get anything going in the seventh.  Mike Jackson went the distance for the Riggers allowing 5 earned runs while striking out 4. Jared Greenberg was 2-3 and Aaron Graves was 1-3 with 2 RBI.

Game #22 - July 6, 2002 - Red Deer, AB - With a berth in Sunday's semi-finals secure the Riggers took on first time entrant Innisfail Indians.  The game was no contest as the Indians too had secured a birth in the other semi with an earlier victory over Smithfield.  The Indians saved their pitching and the Riggers put 21 runs up on the board and allowed only 3 in a game that was called after 5 innings.  Jay Steeves went the 5 innings on the mound for the Riggers.  Aaron Graves had four hits and 4 RBI, while Brendon Mix stroked 2 doubles and hit his first homerun since the 90's (late nineties - it had been awhile not matter how you look at it).

Game #19 - June 29, 2002 - Lethbridge, AB - Another solid performance in the night cap saw Aaron Graves take the defeat on the mound.  The Riggers committed 7 errors behind him and several other miscues lead to a 7-6 defeat.  The Riggers battled back and forth with the Bulls.  The Riggers who were down 4-1 saw Greg Miko clear the bases to tie the game at 4-4.  After the Bulls took the lead, Jason Fraser hit a two run shot to give the Riggers a short lived 6-5 lead.  The Bulls scored two in the bottom of the sixth and held on for the victory.

Game #17 - June 25, 2002 - Red Deer, AB - The stretch of five games in four days is over, and the Riggers came away from the long stretch with only a 3-2 record.  Something that must change if they want to get back for a shot at their second National Championship.  Tuesday, the Edmonton Angels came to the 'RiggerDome' and left with a 9-5 defeat.  Jeff MacDonald went all 9 as he fanned 12 and walked 4.  The Riggers as a team are playing some of their best defensive baseball over the last five years turning 7 double plays in their last 3 games, while committing only 1 error over their last 4.  The offense led by Greg Miko who went 3-5 was also followed up by strong preformances by Curtis Bailey who had a pair of RBI singles, Brendon Mix with two hits; Jared Greenberg and Scott Murray each had a double.

Game #16 - June 24, 2002 - Ft. Saskatchewan, AB - The Riggers traveled to Fort Saskatchewan for their fourth game in four days, and got out of town early by blowing away the Giants 13-3 in seven innings.  Dwayne Lalor went this distance for the Riggers which was needed since they only had 9 players to start the game with numerous people playing out of position.  Lalor scattered 6 hits over his 7 innings.  The two big blows came courtesy of Curtis Bailey and Marty Robinson.  Bailey cleared the bases with a double  in the second and Robinson stroked a double of his own in the third to score two.  Both of these timely hits came with two out, something that has been scarce these days.  Riggers improve to 9-7 overall and 7-3 in the Sunburst League.

Game #15 - June 23, 2002 - St. Albert, AB - In the Semi-Final of the St. Albert same story different game.  The Riggers did take an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, but two innings later, they found themselves down 7-1.  Jason Fraser hit the second homerun of the Riggers season two bring the score to 7-3, but the Cardinals got those two back in the top of the 7th to come out on top 9-3.

Game #14 - June 22, 2002 - St. Albert, AB - In game #2 of the tournament the Riggers faced off against the Calgary Cardinals.  Aaron Graves took the mound for this affair also going the distance for his second complete game in as many appearances, but suffered the loss in both.  The Cardinals struck for 4 runs in the first and 3 more in the second.  Graves shut the door the rest of the way, but the hill was too steep to climb.  The Riggers put up single runs in the third, fourth, and fifth but were never able to put anything across the board that allowed them to make a run at Cardinal starter Jim Lawson.  On the basis of the tournament formula the Riggers finished second in the round robin portion of the tournament and will face the Cardinals again in the semi-final on Sunday.

Game #13 - June 22, 2002 - St. Albert, AB - In the opening game of the St. Albert Tournament the Riggers opened against their city rivals the Red Deer Stags.  A complete game 3 hitter by Marty Davis and 11 runs by the Riggers allowed them to defeat the Stags 11-1 in only six innings of play.

Game #12 - June 19, 2002 - Edmonton, AB - The Riggers dropped their third straight decision with a 12 inning deafeat to the Edmonton Angels.  The Riggers didn't do themselves any favors falling behind 6-0 after just three innings.  They battled back as Jay Steeves pitched 3 scoreless innings (4-6) and gave his teammates a chance to get back into the game.  The Riggers did just that as they tied the game in the top of the 8th.  Jared Greenberg was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to tie the game at 8.  Dwayne Lalor came on after Steeves to pitch 5.2 innings allowing all three runs in the 12th, but all were unearned.  Scott Murray lead the attack with 2 RBI. Riggers that managed hits in the 12 inning afair were, Greenberg, Brendon Mix, Miki Kawahara, Aaron Graves, and Murray.

Game #4 - May 30, 2002 - Ft. Saskatchewan, AB - The Riggers traveled north to play the Giants and ran their winning streak to three in a row and 2-0 in the Sunburst Baseball League.  The Riggers stroked out nine hits while bringing across 10 to outlast the Giants 10-7.  Jay Steeves (1-1) picked up his first win and complete game of the year for the Riggers, after recording 9 in the win colomn in 2001.  Curtis Bailey led the attack with 4 hits and several others had two.  The Riggers committed four errors and looks to be their only weak point thus far.

Game #3 - May 28, 2002 - Red Deer, AB - Game #1 of the installment of the "Battle of Red Deer"  went to the Riggers.  In a battle of miscuses (8 in total), the Stags never challenged after falling behind by six in the first inning (Riggers place kicker missed his first of the year - wide left).  From then on Jeff MacDonald (1-0) went five innings only surrendering one hit.  He then gave way to a well rested Aaron Graves (0-0-1) (took the '01 campaign off) who went three innings picking up the save; his first of the year. Greg Miko lead the way at the plate hitting a couple of double and knocking in two.

Game #2 - May 26, 2002 - Lethbridge, AB - The Riggers bounced back after their first outing of the season by downing the Weyburn Beavers 10-7.  Marty Davis (1-0) picked up the Riggers first win of the season on the mound going five strong innings and taking a no hitter into the fourth.  He gave way to Dwayne Lalor for the next three innings with Shane Stenerson pitching the ninth.  The Riggers had thirteen hits in their second outing showing that already that they have made some adjustments at the plate.  Even though the Beavers scored 7 runs in the game they never really posed a threat to take the lead as the Riggers jumed out to a lead of 6-0 after 2 innings.

Game #1 - May 25, 2002 - Lethbridge, AB - The Riggers opened their season two weeks later than usual in Lethbridge, AB.  Playing against the L.A. Bulls the Riggers definitely needed these exhibition games in order to prepare for their upcoming Sunburst Baseball League games and tournament action later this month.  Jay Steeves (0-1) took the mound in the season opener.  He lasted two innings surrendering 10 runs before giving way to Aaron Tweet; making his Riggers debut.  The Riggers offense looked a little rusty as they only scored 2 runs throughout the contest.  This might have had to do with the fact it was the first game in the Riggers 22 seasons that they are using wood bats.  Definitely some adjustments to approach and offensive game plan will need to take place.  It was good to get everyone a few plate appearances, and the pitcher's their work in no matter the outcome or performance.
