The Death Gate Cycle

Margaret Weis & Tracy Hickman

Millennia ago a battle raged between the Sartan and the Patryn, and the Sartan sundered the world into four realms - air, fire, stone, and water - and then vanished. But now the two races have rediscovered each other through the magic of the Death Gate - and war is about to erupt anew.

DRAGON WING.

Long, long ago sorcerers of matchless power split a world into four realms - sky, stone, fire and sea. Then they vanished. As the ages passed, so did the magic weaken. Magicians learned to work spells only in their own realms, and forgot the secrets of the others. Now only those few who have survived the perils of the Labyrinth and traversed the Death Gate know of the existence of all fours realms...and even they have not unravelled all the mysteries of their sundered world...

Dragon Wing is the tale of Arianus, the Realm of Sky - a world of airborne islands where humans, elves, and dwarves battle for control of precious water. It is a tale of treachery and deceits, of breathtaking wonders and bold adventurers, and of secrets from the dawn of time.

ELVEN STAR.

Pryan, the Realm of Fire - a world where never-ending sunlight and plentiful rain have given birth to a jungle so vast that humans and elves live in the trees and only dwarves live anywhere near the ground. From the treetops the aristocratic elves serve as weapon merchants to the other races, whose incessant warfare sends a steady stream of profits and resources skyward.

Passing through the Death Gate, Haplo is sent to sow chaos among Pryan's inhabitants. But the constant wars have already achieved this. The generations of dissent and race hatred will not heal even under the threat of annihilation at the hands of the legendary tytans. Crying doom and armed with a magic as powerful as Haplo's own, a human priest and his dragon ride in the vanguard of destruction. Now Haplo's salvation lies in his ability to overcome the tytans - but not even he knows the way to conquer these renegade giants.

FIRE SEA.

Haplo the Patryn, commanded to journey to each of the four worlds through the Death Gate, rides a sea of fiery magma into Abarrach, Realm of Stone. Haplo shares his rune-guarded vessel with the Sartan named Alfred, presumed to be the last living member of his race. But on discovering the deserted, bloodied city of Safe Harbour, Haplo and ALfred - by nature enemies and by necessity comrades - come face to face with a lost tribe of Sartan practising their most forbidden magic.

Abarrach is soon swept up in a civil war. The realm's rulers search desperately for the Death Gate, driven by the horrifying knowledge that doom is gradually overcoming their world. A doom spelled out in a mystical, inscrutable prophecy that foretells very different fates for the living...and the dead.

SERPENT MAGE.

Haplo the Patryn is sent out to further his exploration of the sundered realms, preparing the way for the arrival of the Lord of the Nexus. He journeys to Chelestra, Realm of Sea, where submerged islands encased in bubbles of air drift around an inner sun. It is a place where human, dwarf, and elf have learned to live in peace, building the giant submersibles that will take them to safety when their sun burns out. But the sudden appearance of the giant dragon-snakes who feed on fear threatens not only their peace, but their very survival.

As Haplo joins the struggle with the serpents, Alfred the Sartan finds his ancestors at last. Long hidden beneath Chelestra's waters, they lie sleeping in their magical domain. Alfred wakens them only to realise that he has lived too long among the humans, elves, and dwarves. He can no longer accept the Sartan's exalted place as demigods...

The resulting titanic conflict will involve mortal and immortal alike - humans and elves, Sartan and Patryn - and forces well beyond any of these. The winner will control not only Chelestra, but perhaps the Death Gate itself.

More important, the evil force that Haplo and Alfred discovered on Chelestra has escaped. As Haplo's doubts about his master grow ever deeper, he must decide whether to obey the Lord of the Nexus or betray the powerful Patryn...and endeavour to bring peace to the universe.

INTO THE LABYRINTH.

From his army of the undead, Xar, Lord of the Nexus, learns of the existence of the mysterious Seventh Gate. It is said that this gate grants whoever enters it the power to create worlds - or destroy them. Only Haplo knows it's location - but he doesn't know that he knows it. Now an ex-lover has been sent to betray Haplo and bring back his corpse. Meanwhile, the assassin Hugh the Hand is also after Haplo, wielding the Accursed Blade. With his old companion Alfred, Haplo must seek sanctuary in the Labyrinth - a deadly prison maze whose inhabitants are condemned to death.

THE SEVENTH GATE.

Though the battle for Abri has been won, it has been at a terrible cost. Haplo, mortally wounded, has been captured by Xar and taken to Abarrach. There Xar plots to turn Haplo into one of the tormented undead so that he can force the corpse to reveal the location of the legendary Seventh Gate.

Meanwhile, Marit and Hugh the Hand are trapped in the Labyrinth, where they have gone to find Alfred, last seen battling a dragon. Though Alfred is believed dead, his powerful magic is desperately needed to fend off the dragon-snakes and rescue Haplo. When Marit discovers that Alfred has been captured alive by the fearsome dragon, she nearly gives in to despair.

But suddenly hope arrives in the Labyrinth, as the good dragons from Pryan, led by the befuddled old wizard Zifnab, appear to join the fight against their evil cousins, the dragon-snakes. The Sartan are summoned as well. If only Xar could be persuaded to give up his obsession with the Seventh Gate to join the fray, they just might have a chance...
