She then commenced training cruises to familiar places:

A new port was added to the itinerary, the Nationalist Chinese base at Kaohsiung, Taiwan. The Tom Green arrivied at 10 September and departed for Kobe, Japan a few days later.
My father (who passed away in 1997) was Gerald Patrick Dougherty and he was on the USS Tom Green County from 1958 - 1960 (Third Cruise and part of the Fourth). His rate was SKSN. I wondered if perhaps any of you might remember him? This is what I know:
This is a photo of my father with the Tom Green County as a backdrop. The following are my Dad's words: Part of a written recollection of the time he spent aboard the Tom Green.
"I was a little apprehensive when I first went aboard, but after a few days I was becoming accustomed to a sailor's life. The first voyage I made was to Formosa, where we dropped off Marines to help maintain order on the island. After that we were island hopping continuously.
I had many memorable liberties on these islands. Once again we were on our way back to San Diego then to San Francisco, which I consider to be the greatest city in the United States. It was necessary to have the ship repaired at this port. I made one more tour of the islands in 1960, and when I was in Yokohama, Japan, I received orders to report to Bainbridge, Maryland, and after a year at Bainbridge, I completed by four year enlistment."
I look forward to hearing from anyone who might have known my father. My Email address is: DoughertySarah@cs.com Thank you.
A four day visit at Pearl Harbor from 27 November to 30 November and then on to San Diego, arriving 10 December 1958 to round out the year.
During May 1958 Tom Green County was deployed again to the Far East. She arrived at Pearl Harbor 16 June and departed for Yokosuka 19 June and made port at Yokosuka on 4 July 1958 to commence amphibious support exercises.
I received this request from the daughter of a Third Cruise Shipmate and thought the best way I could help her was to place her request within the Third Cruise web page.
He went to Basic Training at the U. S. Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, Illinois and graduated November 6, 1957. From there he received orders to report to the U.S. Naval Training Center, San Diego, California where he graduated June 27, 1958, Store Keeper Class "A". From there he received orders to report to the USS Tom Green County in the Pacific so he traveled to the Philippines to board the ship.
I came aboard in 59. We left for the fareast in Sept of that year. I came aboard when the ship was in drydock and left in May of 62 when it was in drydock. (The only time I wasn't seasick} Home port was in Yokosuka, Japan. Favorite place to visit was Hong Kong & Subic Bay. My best freind was David Piechowski from Green Bay Wis. Had a great time, would love to hear from some of my shipmates. Dennis Freeburg
She remained engaged in these activities through the fall of 1958, with the five day visit to Kobe starting at 23 October and ending 28 October, before returning to the USA.

Local operations between the west coast and Pearl Harbor occupied the ship through May 1960. This is pretty good duty.
Probably one of the best known views on Oahu Island. A memorial to the sailors that defended the freedoms we enjoy today.
