In May of 1967 Tom Green county was the first Large LST to beach at the new Viet Nam supply port Cua Viet, which is just inside the mouth of the Cua Viet river. Late in the afternoon with temperatures over 100 degrees, a fire broke out less tha a hundred yards from the ships bow among the stacks of empty sandbags stored on pallets next to the ammunition supply. Wind was fanning the fire and it was spreading from pallet to pallet, ever closer to the stockpiled ammunition. The O.D. called out the rescue and assistance party and in seconds they responded with hoses in hand.
With all the ships pumps making maximum pressure the crew of the Tom Green County had the fire under control is just under 30 minutes. Their quick response and effective fire fighting skills
saved the new supply and support facility, and the Tom Green County. The following photos contributed by Jerry and Jack Bogart show the Tom Green County battling the fire.
