| He jumps. He kicks. He swings.
He does karate chops to the Batman theme. Though it's part of
his job description, it hardly seems appropriate to attach the word
"lounge" to performer Randy Wonderful; he works harder in the
course of a half-hour set than the governor does all week. With his big
band, broad repertoire of swing standards and originals and addictive,
good-to-see-ya personality, Wonderful is exactly the kind of entertainer
that visitors come to Vegas expecting to see. A former female impersonator
- he appeared in Legends in Concert for nearly five years - Vargas has
talent and savvy beyond his years. When Art Vargas plays a room - and he's
at rooms all around town, but you really should catch him at the
Venetian's Venus bar - he plays the entire room. Even if he couldn't punch
out note-perfect, personality-plus renditions of "Just a
Gigolo," "Fly Me to the Moon" and "Mack the
Knife," he would draw a crowd nevertheless - people wanting to see
and hear what Vegas was like back in the day. Randy Wonderful respects
that nostalgia-hungry audience, and gives them exactly what they
want. Shucks, he's just wonderful! |
