The Red Lake Alternative Learning Center of Red Lake ISD # 38 walks a different road and dances to a different drum to achieve a high school diploma. The program serving 110 students in grades 9-12 in the Red Lake Nation, is the only community-based independent study program of its kind in the state of Minnesota funded by the Department of Children, Families, and Learning. Traveling teachers work in teams of two to serve Redby, Ponemah, Red Lake and Little Rock communities providing high school curriculum at convenient sites. Karen Good and Linda Johnson team up for science and English while Shelly Fredriksen and Brenda Hazeman team up for social studies and mathematics. The ALC was founded in 1994 to encourage and assist Native students to get a high school diploma, which opens the door for other employment and higher education opportunities. The ALC staff works very hard to make the learning sites comfortable and equipped to meet student needs. We have had over 150 students graduate since our program started. It is a joy to see the former graduates continuing on with a very productive life, some choosing employment and others going on to higher education. We are proud of our program and our students. Check out our links below to learn more about enrolling, potential senior requirements, student works, to learn about our staff, and to check out our different sites. |
