Several organizations have begun the fight to legalize physician-assisted suicide since the national debate on its legality began. One such organization is Compassion in Dying, established in 1993. They provide information, emotional support and personal help to mentally competent, terminally ill adults who want a peaceful and humane end of life. They are actively involved in trying to change the current health care system in our country by working with doctors and patients to achieve a balance where both groups are comfortable and happy with the changes that are made. To aid in this system of changes, Compassion in Dying published certain guidelines and safeguards that they adhere to and they are forthright about their mission and work. Compassion in Dying gained national notoriety when they argued cases against the state of Washington and the state of New York questioning the legality of laws that prohibit physician assisted suicide in front of the Supreme Court. |
