Red Raider Sports Report for 1/21/01 |
||||||
The Winter break is over, and classes will begin for Colgate's student athletes tomorrow. For the winter teams, it means the time for focusing just on thier sport is over. They will see the overlapping of the beginning of the semester, with the closing of thier season. Colgate will be somewhat different this semester. The administration is looking to increase the number of social alternatives to drinking available. This doesn't explicity mean they will be cracking down on drinking, just the illegal kinds, they are expected to support the students who are fighting some NY state regulations on fraternity parties. The Commencment speaker hasn't been announced yet. But Al Sharpton will be giving a speech, as is Ruben "The Hurricane" Carter. John Feinstein will also be on campus for a book signing later this month. His book, "The Last Amatuers" has placed the Patriot League in the spotlight when he praised the league as having true student athletes. I think there is a mood of change on campus, but I think the forces that make Colgate what it is are still there. The winter teams are still having thier ups and downs. The Mens Hockey team finished thier two game series with Cornell. We were only able to get 1 point off the two games. The team played hard, but seemed to have some problems here and there. The season can still come together for us, but it's time for me to concede that we are not one of the best teams in the ECAC this year. Chad MacDonald got a talking to after the game at Lynah. And the whole team remained in the locker room for at least 20 minutes right after the game at Starr rink for a team meeting, while Coach Vaughan did not let any press into the locker room as customary. They played fairly well, but let in 3 powerplay goals, as well as one shorthanded tally. The Womens Hockey team is faltering a little bit mid season. They were 5th in the nation coming into this weekend, but lost to Williams on the road yesterday. We outshot them, but could not convert. Heather Murphy had both goals for Colgate. She announced in an interview with Michele Kelley that she is going abroad next fall, and will miss soccer season, but be back in time for the start of hockey. She mentioned that some of our players have been playing at less than 100% due to injury. That could be the reason scoring has decreased. The Mens Basketball team continues to play strong, defeating Patriot League foe, Lehigh. Howard Blue was once again named PL rookie of the week for his efforts against Army. In the Lehigh game, he scored 18, while pulling in 11 rebounds. Dave Hardy led the team with 23 points, another solid game. But you have to give credit to Pat Campolieta, when I saw the game, he didn't seem to have the presence I was used to, just 5 rebounds, then I saw the stats sheet, and found out that he did not miss one shot all night! He was 6-6 from the field, and 6-6 from the foul line. League wins are always good. The Womens Basketball team continues to slump. They did not play a full game against Albany, and took a loss. They played well against Lehigh, but Lehigh played better. McCaffery continues to earn her nickname "Spot", while the other players have come and gone. Staying mentally focused for the whole game seems to be the problem. One intersting item of note is that you may have noticed 2 non league games right in the middle of teh Patriot LEAgue schedule this year. Coach Rohn did this on purpose to allow senior Laura Rohrbacher to play in more games, as Volleyball interfered with the beginning of basketball season. She had 19 points and 7 rebounds in those two games. Recruits continue to come in. Mike Orfini will follow in the footsteps of Devin Tuohey and Howard Blue, from Gonzaga in Washington DC. He's 6'5", and from what I hear, can shoot quite well, especially from the outside. The Football team also signed what can be a very promising atlhelete in Michael Chrystie. He was ranked the number 71 kicker in the country, but keep in mind, that includes D-1A schools. He also seems to be an outstanding athelte, who excelled as a kicker, defensive back, quarterback, and running back. He had schools like Syracuse and Virginia Tech looking at him. Even if he just shores up our kicking game, this was a big recruit to land. This most recent fanpoll asked about who you would like to see interviewed on this website. Personally, I'm a bit nervous about doing an interview, especially with someone I don't know. But I think its a good idea, and want to see where it can go. I'm planning to actually do a series of interviews. With atheletes, coaches, as well as other people connected with Colgate atheltics. The goal is to present to everyone a picture of how the program is run, as well as what it means to be a student atheltes at Colgate. I have not sent out invintations yet, as I'm still trying to think about what players or coaches to interview. But I will be interviewing Mark Murphy at some point this week to get things started on the series. Finally, I am sad to report that as a member of the Colgate Pep Band, our war with the Cornell Pep Band, has seemed to come to an end. After awful relations last year, everything seemed to go very well this series. For those of you who were not at the games, here's the story of the "Swanne River". Cornell has a habit of finding the most obnoxious cheers. They are proud of that, and the hostile atmosphere at Lynah rink. One cheer we found particularly bad was the Swanne River cheer. Which includes the tubas from the Cornell band going over to behind the Colgate bench, and playing the song, while the fans join in at the appropriate parts with "Hey Colgate" "Drop dead" "Die" "Go home". We never liked this cheer especially, and last year at Lynah, as the Tubas started playing, the Colgate band kicked in with the fight song. The cheer was ruined, and the fans were pissed. An e-mail argument went back and forth after that series. Relations were strained at Lake Placid, when they tried to play the song over the Colgate section and band, this time directly trying to insult the Colgate fans, who fought back with more fight songs and cheers. Cornell finally returned to thier own section. Allthough relations between the two bands at the football game this year were not great, Colgate decided to return to Lynah rink with a different plan of action. We had a plan for Swanne River, but we let thier band know we were not going to be playing over it like we did last year. When the time came, and the Tubas were in position, the Colgate band set down thier instruments, and stood up, and locked arms. As the song was being played, the fans on the Colgate side of the ice began to sing "Kumbaya" while swaying back and forth. And finally, we had made a poster, that just said "Why Hate?" with a peace sign on it. Afterwards, several people from Cornell said it was the best response to Swanne River they have ever seen. Thats it for the Sunday edition of Ramblings, have a good week. |
