Report for November 12th, 2000

Let's try another installment of the bi-weekly column, look for them to also appear in thier own section of the site starting soon.

Every Colgate team to see action yesterday lost, this can only be expected after Friday's tragedy. The Swimming and Diving team wisely postponed thier meet to allow team members to grieve.

Two atheltes were involved in the accident, both from the Track and Field team. Katherine Altmeter passed away in the accident, and Elke Wagle suffered multiple injuries, including a broken pelvis. Please remember to say a prayer for all involved.

The Mens Basketball team will open up thier season this weekend. The team has looked very good in the preseason, and expects to be very competitive this year. While the freshman class will add greatly to the depth of the team, one has stood out and can become an immediate starter, that foward Howard Blue, no relation to the female basketbal player from Bucknell, who we all enjoyed making fun of.

The Mens Hockey team caputured 0 points in thier first weekend of ECAC action. As a result, Union now leads the ECAC standings. David Cann got to play all 60 minutes of Saturdays game, and proved to be up to the task. He let in 3 goals, and looked very strong in net, stopping 3 breakaways. Kevin Johns was injured for Saturdays game with a groin pull. He joins PJ Yedon on the disabled list. Sam Sturgis left the game Saturday with an injured hand, meanwhile Sean Nolan is only around 70%. Is it any wonder the offense has been suffering? The last 7 Colgate goals have been scored by the special teams.

Sophomore punter Brendon Biddle has been named a Verizon Academic All American for district 1. His 3.52 GPA earns him the right to compete with 22 others for the right to become an Academic All American. He's also one of the leagues top punters.

We'll end this report with several quotes, both from last nights hockey broadcast. First, after a breakaway attempt by Union that failed. "Thank you Mr. Hutchins, that was the worst shot of the night." And here's one from after the first Union goal, after you could hear the big goal horn going off for at least 15 - 20 seconds... "Well thats obnoxious" (spoken to his broadcast partner in a very calm voice after several seconds of silence.
