Red Raider Report
                                   11/15/00
This is one of the biggest weekend of the year coming up, with several teams wrapping up, and others just getting started!  Let's look first at the games at Colgate this weekend.

The
Mens Hockey team is returning home for the second time this year.  The team is currently just 1-5-2 on the season, and tied for last in the ECAC after last years road trip to RPI and Union.  It's Silver Puck weekend, which can roughly be compared to homecoming for football, basically, it's going to be a big event.   On Friday, it's a normal 7 pm start time, and the opponent will be Brown.  This is a can't lose game and they are going to need the fans there to help Colgate to continue to have one of the best home ice advantages in the ECAC.  Harvard will be skating into town on Saturday.  That game has a special start time of 4 pm.  Harvard is near the top of the ECAC standings, and they will have a rough night on Friday as Cornell fans take thier greatest pleasure in life, throwing fish at Harvard.  Harvard should win that game, and you know how Cornell can get when they are about to lose a game.  Do we really need to ask who nearly incited a brawl on the ice moments before losing to Union last weekend?   Colgate will have it's share of injuries heading into the weekend, and the offense is going to really need someone to step up.  Players who could possibly be out or be playing injured: PJ Yedon, Sam Sturgis, Kevin Johns, Sean Nolan and Chad MacDonald will be serving a game DQ on Friday.  Colgate has been backed into a corner, let's see who steps it up at Starr Rink.  My money would be on Mike O'Malley and Etienne Morin, it wouldn't be bad to see a freshman score a goal or two either.

The
Men's Basketball team opens up Friday at 5pm against Hobart, that game taking place in a newly remodeled Cotterell Court, which is looking quite nice.  Colgate is ranked quite a bit above Hobart, and won last years game by 23 points.  It's going to be interesting to see how the team looks after losing Jordon Harris.

The
Womens Basketball team also opens at home this season, facing Drexel at 1 pm on Saturday.  Drexel returns just 2 starters, Colgate will be playing 4 for of the 7 key players from last season.  The Red Raiders narrowly lost this game last year on the road.   This game could serve as an early indicator of where the team stands this year.

The 3rd team with thier home opener this weekend is the
Womens Ice Hockey team.   The team has shown promise and could go all the way in thier final year at division 3.   They play ECAC opponent Wesleyan on Saturday at 7:30 pm, and Connecticut College on Sunday at 3 pm.   They should be 2 big wins and exciting games, so I strongly urge you to check it out.

We're not done yet, there are some big road games this weekend.  The
Football team is going to finish up thier season against one of thier biggest league rivals, Bucknell.  While this game means nothing as far as the playoffs are concerened, it is going to be pretty intense.  First of all, there are the President's Cup Points, a win will mean Colgate will finish is second, possibly tied with Holy Cross, and loss could put us in a tie for second or third, possibly with 3 other teams!   If the Bison won this game, it will be the 30th win for thier senior class, and they will graduate with the most wins of any one class in thier programs history.

The
Volleyball team is the second seed going into the League tournament this weekend, but they are not in the best of positions for defending thier league title.  The first opponent in Army.  The Cadet's have bested Colgate twice all ready this year, and Colgare has only won 1 game compared the the 6 won by Army in those two matches.  If Colgate wins, they will most likey move on to face host, Bucknell.   Last weekend, Colgate lost to Bucknell on the road.  They are going to need to resurrect a little bit of last seasons magic to make it back to the NCAA tournament.

Andy McDonald got the call earlier this week.  He was called up to the NHL and played his first game two nights ago.  He saw 9 minutes of ice time, took a shot or two, got sent to the penalty box, and was sent back to the AHL the next day.  He looked pretty good, the coach just wanted to give some of the AHL guys a taste of the NHL action, and why not?  Anaheim is currently last in the Pacific division with a 6-8-3 record.   What's Andy's career highlight so far?  Because he was flown out to LA and didn't have time to drive there so he would have a car, teament Teemu Selanne lent him one of his to drive around for a day or two.

It's signing week for mens NCAA Ice Hockey.   Colgate currently has just two recruits lined up for next season.
Yale leads the league with 6, a few have 1 or 0, but Colgate hopefully will pull in a few before the early signing period ends tomorrow.  The two recruits we do have both come to us from the Owen Sounds Greys, Adam Mitchell is currently second on his team in points, while his linemate, Darryl McKinnon, is fourth in points with less games.  The team is currently in first place of the Mid Western Ontario Junior B league.
