Red Raider Report
                                   11/26/00
What a frustrating weekend for Colgate athletics, all of the teams I follow lost thier last game.  Must have been too much turkey, or something.  Let's look at what went wrong and where.

The
Mens Hockey team took last place in the SIT for the first time since 1976, losing to Niagara and Clarkson.  No one was really sharing the puck, despite a lot of shot attempts against the Purple Eagles, not many were very threatening.   Colgate took a lot of breaks on the ice, and that led to trouble.  David Cann was pulled for the first time after allowing two goals in the first 10 minutes on Sunday.  On the bright side, at least Niagara beat Cornell in the finals.  And for Colgate, winter break cannot come fast enough.

The
Womens Hockey team was surprised by St. Mary's today, after winning the first game of the series.   All 6 of St. Mary's goals in the second game were on special teams.  Ouch, St. Mary's is somewhat comprable to Colgate, but this is not a good sign with Middlebury skating into town next weekend.  3 of the 6 goals were scored by freshman.  Jen Burtraws save percentage is going to be hurting, she allowed  8 goals and made 28 saves.   Heather Murphy becomes the top scorer in program history after this weekends efforts.

The
Mens Basketball team finished up 2 of the 3 tough early season games.  They lost to Northern Arizona after falling asleep in the middle part of the game.  They showed strong work ethic against Arizona State, and won praise from their coach.  Howard Blue continues to show a lot of potential and is an early candidate for the all league rookie team.

The
Womens basketball team also suffered a dissapointing setback, losing by 10 at Iona.  You could argue that this is a slight improvement over last year, when we lost by 10 to Iona at home.  We were within 1 point with just 3 minutes and some change left though.  So all is not lost.  Malissa Burke leads the freshman class so far.  The team looks just as solid as last year, and has improved a little, it is going to be hard to overcome the gap between us and the elite of the league though.

Lehigh overcame all odds and pounded Western Illinois this weekend to advance to the next round of the Division 1-AA football playoffs.  While the win looks great for the Patriot League, many league fans have remembered how we fared against the Gateway Conference Champions last year.   The board at the Patriot Rivals site hosted one of the biggest flame fests I have ever seen.

Thats about it out of me, I've been driving and packing most of today, and am not happy reporting about all our teams losing.  The games to look at for this week is the Mens Basketball annual showdown with
Syracuse this tuesday on the road, we have a decent chance of losing by less than 20 this year!  The womens team faces a challenge when they take on Cornell on the road on Wednesday.  The womens hockey team has some big games coming up.  They meet the Syracuse Stars this Thursday at Starr rink, and this weekend, the biggest game in program history, Middlebury skates into town.  If you go to 1 womens hockey game this year, this is the one.
