Red Raider Report 11/29/00 |
||||
Imagine this, your a hungry Syracuse University mens basketball fan at the game yesterday. You know that if your team scores 75 points against Colgate, you will recieve a free taco compliments of Taco Bell, not a problem you think, the Orangemen are 4-0 and ranked 19th in the nation, they have scored 75 points at least in all but one game, and against good teams. Well guess what? If that was the case, then you went home hungry. Colgate started off doing not so good, but they came out in the second half, and they were a different team. The team faced a very tough schedule in the early season, and they finally responded in a way that makes other schools on our schedule very nervous. Colgate still lost, but only by 8, we scored 20 of the games last 22 points. Martin Marek rose to stardom in just one game, and we should see him a lot more after he came off the bench to score 17. Syracuse native Pat Campolieta also shined, leading the team in rebounds with 9, Syracuse would only beat us by 1 in the rebound department. Colgate also got it's yearly mention on Sportscenter following this game, and they didn't even make a bad toothpaste joke like last year. This is the best 1-3 start the team has had in a good long while. You know whos gotta be nervous right now? Ithaca. The Red Raiders play the Bombers this Thursday night at the new Cotterrel Court. Speaking of big games, the Womens Ice Hockey team faces some of the biggest and toughest games of thier careers this week. The Syracuse Stars skate into town tomorrow night. Yes, they are a HS team, but they won the state championship two years running and already decimated two our our league rivals. That game is just a tune up though. The game everyone is looking at will be this Saturday at 2 pm. Thats when Middlebury arrives. Middlebury, who is currently up to something like 94 or 6 consecutive Division 3 wins. Colgate is the last real obstacle they face before reaching 100 in a row. Can the Red Raiders pull off the upset? If you are reading this, it means you now have to go to this game, and bring people with you, it's that big. The team has been waiting for this game since the end of last season. The Mens Hockey team hopes to pick up some tough points this weekend as they face Princeton and Yale. Princeton holds the distinction of being the only ECAC team we didn't beat last year, and Yale is always a good game. It's also the last home games of the semester, and the team could use the support. If you were at the Yale games during the playoffs last year, you might have seen a new Colgate tradition. Look for the Flag guys to make thier return this weekend to try to get the crowd going. The Womens Basketball team is also looking to improve its record. They play Cornell tonight in a tough game, and Long Island University on Sunday. Two more games that will be a good indication of how the rest of the season will go. Turning to some Colgate alumni, Dave Gagnon's name appeared as the East Coast Hockey League's goalie of the week. He was an All-American, Hobey Baker finalist, and ECAC player of the year in 1990, the year Colgate made the NCAA finals. Well end this weeks report with some quotes, first from the mens basketball game last night, and our announcers. "Hey guys! They missed!"- Announcer stunned that Syracuse missed a shot. "Well, it looks like they would have trouble hitting the side of a barn right now"- Skip, expressing displeasure at our first half shooting percentage. And finally, one from myself as I was debating about an upcoming womens basketball game at Wagner College. She was confident in a victory for them, saying that she has faith in her team, my response. "Yeah, well we have Faith ON our team" Enjoy the rest of your week everyone, see you at the games this weekend!
