Red Raider Report 12/3/00 |
|||
Lots of exciting games this weekend, it was a good time to be around the gym, as they were all at home. The womens basketball team found themselves in a war of attrition with L.I.U., both teams made mistakes, but were playing hard, and both teams were going after the win. The game went to overtime, then double overtime. Finally Colgate put them away, when Frances Boone made a key interception and converted on the ensuing foul shots. You could argue that Colgate should have won by more, but a win like this builds a lot of confidence and charachter, something they are still trying to establish this year. And considering how we broke down at the end of the past few games, a double overtime win is pretty impressive. Across the hall at Starr Rink, the Womens Ice Hockey team was involved in a battle with #1 Middlebury. Colgate showed they could skate with them, and for parts of the game, Middlebury looked desperate to clear to puck. They beat us on skating and passing, they were setting up the better shots, a good scouting job for them. It doesn't hurt to kick the stick away from the goalie either. If Colgate plays this way for the rest of the season, you will see a rematch in the ECAC finals. It was great to see all the fans turn out and be very excited for this game. I don't know what I'm going to do with my "Beat Middlebury" shirt though, maybe write in almost, maybe save it till we do in the ECAC finals and just change the date.... The Mens Bsketball team won a thriller at Cotterrel court this weekend. Binghamton drove up route 12 to reintroduce themselves to Colgate as they enter Division 1. They brought their fans, mascot and cheerleaders, giving the arena a really good atmosphere as everyone in the building was hoping for a good game. I was really impressed with the Bearcats, they played a very solid game, Colgate ended up beating them on talent in the end though. I thought all was lost with about 2 minutes left, but Colgate refused to lose on their home court, making one heck of a comeback. We were down by 3, when we made a basket with 7 seconds left, fouled thier player at 6, he missed both shots, then Mark Linebaugh connected with a long three pointer at the buzzer!!! It was one heck of a finish. The Mens Hockey team gave us a reason to hope this weekend. After a dissapointing game against Princeton on Friday, where we gave up 5 goals in a row, Colgate came out swinging against Yale. Unfortunatly, that landed Chad MacDonald in the penalty box for a 5 minute major and he had to leave the game in the first. In addition to that, we had another penalty, so there was about a minute and a half of 5-3, which we killed! Scoring thier first collegiate goals this weekend were Rob Brown, Bob Vandersluis and Kyle Doyle. A little offensive pressure, and people will put the puck in the net. It was enough to tire someone running around the rink with a flag out. The pieces are starting to come together, we have a little bit of time now before our next ECAC game to get better and healthier. We moved up to 9th place in the ECAC. The Patriot League has been announcing it's all decade teams, here are the Red Raider's who found there names on this list of elites.
