Red Raider Sports Report for 2/18/01 |
|||||
Hello sports fans, welcome once more to the Red Raider sports report, a mixture of results, previews, recruiting news and commentary, all you need to know about what's been going on at Colgate athletics, first, the teams.. The Mens Hockey team extended, and then ended their winning streak this weekend. It wasn't pretty, but they beat UVM 2-1, with all the scoring coming within 5 minutes in the second period. Dan Stay, who only recently scored his first collegiate goal, netted the game winner. David Cann stopped 23 of 24 shots. Those in attendance at the game saw the debut of the new Colgate Zamboni. The Red Raider's did not pick up their play the next night, and paid for it against Dartmouth. After a nearly scoreless 1st, Dartmouth scored near the end of the period. The Big Green then scored twice in the first 5 minutes of period two to put the game away. Ben Bryce scored the lone Colgate goal in the second period. The team looked just a little bit slow all weekend, and not as agressive on offense as we need to be. The loss puts Colgate back out of the playoffs, which puts us in trouble heading up to face the top two teams in the league next weekend. To try and figure out all the playoff madness, I suggest THIS SITE. Yeah, it's run by a Cornell fan, but you can run through all the situations that could happen heading down the streach. I've also completed my interview with Don Vaughan, the head coach, and Andrew Dickson, former captain and assistant coach, you can check that out HERE. The Womens Basketball team took loss number 7 in a row. Losing 88-60 to Bucknell. Shooting continues to hurt us, as is rebounding, making mistakes, fouling, and leadership. But we have beat Navy, and thats who we are playing on Wednesday. Our last two games are both winnable, and we need to do something to give us any form of momentum going into the tournament. Remember to show up on time this Wednesday for a special presentation for the teams seniors. The Mens Basketball team sufferred a heartbreaking loss to Lehigh this week. The loss drops us down to 4th place. As I write this, we are battling toe to toe with Bucknell, who hasn't won a game since we beat them earlier this year. A win for Colgate will even out the series record. The Womens hockey team topped Southern Maine on Saturday. That win will go a long way on this, the final weekend of the regular season. The last game of the season is today, we're playing MIT, whose scored 2 goals all year. Ya gotta hope for a win there. Let's see how we close out our final Division 3 season. Info is starting to come in on next years recruiting class. Check out their info on our Recruits page. We got a few steals, winning recruiting battles with many of the top teams, including those in the Ivy League and Hockey East. We got one of the top 5 goalies in the United States. As well as the starting center and a starting defenseman from one of the best prep teams in the US. We're still going to take a few years to develop in our new home, but this is a good start and will certainly help speed up that process. In other news, the Swimming and Diving team hosted the Patriot League championships this weekend, both teams finished 5th. It sounded pretty loud from what I heard. The Indoor Track and Field Championships are also underway. Let's hope they can help us pick up those President's Cup points. The Womens Lacrosse team is on the road this weekend. They are at Duke for the South of the Border Tournament. It's a series of scrimmages that will help the teams determine where they stand heading into the regular season. The Patriot League has picked Colgate to finish first this year by a narrow margin. It's up to the returning players to provide the leadership to get us to that point, and it's up to the freshman to carry us beyond that. This has the potential of being a very good season for the team. That's it for this weekend, a few last second scores to report, Bucknell won the mens basketball game 70-61 and the womens hockey team won thier game. |
