Red Raider Sports Report for 2-22-01 |
||||||
The winter seasons are coming to an end, the spring sports are just getting started, there's action all about, and it a good time to be a fan! The Womens Hockey team plays in the ECAC quarterfinals this Saturday in a game at the University of Vermont. This year we are the number 7 seed going into the playoffs compared to being 2nd last year. UVM is ranked 4th in the nation, Colgate is 8th. Vermont won the regular season meeting 2-0 despite Colgate out shooting them 2-1. This will be a close game that could go either way. Good luck to the Red Raiders! The Mens Hockey team continues to fight for their playoff lives. We are currently out of the playoffs, and facing the top 2 teams in the league on the road this weekend. If we can get a win, we deserve to be in the playoffs, and will most likely face one of these teams again in the first round. Getting swept would force us to come up with something in the final weekend if we are going to even make the first round. There are no injuries to report for Colgate, but SLU might be without their top scorer. I've always said we can skate with any team in the league, now is the time to prove it. The Womens Basketball team came up with a little magic last night. Navy had us on the ropes. We were down by 25 with under 15 minutes left. The game seemed over, we were going through the motions, Coach Rohn doesn't even bother yelling any more... But something happened. Maybe we didn't want to see our losing streak extend to 8, maybe Navy thought the game was over, maybe Colgate was annoyed with the possible gloating of the Navy players and decided they weren't going to take it anymore. Either way, Colgate exploded, going on a 33-6 run. Foul trouble caught up to the Midshipmen. and the Red Raider's stunned the visiting crowd en route to their second league win. It was senior night at Colgate, thankfully the crowd began to fill in later in the game, because it was very unimpressive at the start of the game. The Mens Basketball team fought hard, but came up short in their game against Navy. Rob Akers got his first start in honor of senior night. Navy tied it with a 3 pointer at the end of regulation, then pulled away in overtime. This clinches second place in the league for them, while Colgate is now in the middle. The Red Raider's have one more battle with Lafayette before the start of the playoffs. It's a tough time for all teams involved, being a 1 bid conference, 6 seasons will end, and only 1 will go on. Being that 1 team is what everyone has worked at since the day last season ended. The Mens Lacrosse season opens up tomorrow against the defending national champions, Syracuse, in the Carrier Dome. The series is resuming after a 15 year break. Colgate was picked to finish 5th in the Patriot League. It could be a long night for the Red Raider's, but if you want to play the best, this is the place to start. Last weeks fanpoll asked about which spring sport were you looking foward to the most. Most people picked "other" and then the conversation switched to baseball for a few days. Go figure, I try to raise interest about the spring program, and the only sport people want to talk about is the one we don't have! It's going to be an exciting season, and there's a different atmosphere when we are back outdoors again. Consider enjoying a game at Tyler Field or out on Eaton Street fields if you experience some withdrawal following the conclusion of the winter season. This week I'm trying something different with the fanpoll, it's Survivor time! And it's your chance to vote a school out of the league each night. Bucknell was given the first round off due to their winning of the Presidents Cup last year. You can vote on what fans you don't like, what program you don't like, you can do it based on schools and politics, or just which school wins the most. Even vote for yourself if you think you could do better elsewhere. Remember this is all in fun, could be interesting though.. I'll close with some quotes from 2,000 Sports Quips and Quotes by Glenn Liebman. I'm just going through the book in alphabetical order by topic, so that's why there are all these alumni quotes at the begninning. "I'm not going to wear this for at least 24 hours. After 2-9 and 1-10 seasons, I'm a little edgy about anything that ticks" - Lee Corso, after recieving a watch as a gift from an alumni "I always preferred a running offense, but I am smart enough to put in one long incomplete pass per quarter just for the alumni"- Duffy Daugherty "I ask them to give us a lot of money, but not their two cents"- Joe Paterno on alumni boosters. "If a horse can't eat it, then I don't like it"- Dick Allen, on astroturf "I've graduated from clipboard to headset"- Cliff Stoudt, on moving from the Steelers number 3 to number 2 quarterback "We were tipping off our plays. Whenever we broke from the huddle, three backs were laughing and one was as pale as a ghost"- John Breen on a bad Houston Oilers team |
