Red Raider Sports Report for 2/25/01 |
||||||
Hello and welcome to the Red Raider sports report, all your Colgate sports news wrapped up in a neat little package. It's been a week with some pretty big victories, lets get down to it. First and formost, the Womens Hockey team defeated one of the best goalies in the division when they met UVM in their ECAC quarterfinal game. The game went to triple overtime, when Heather Murphy beat out the UVM goalie to pull off the upset. UVM was the number 2 seed, Colgate was eigth. It's only going to get tougher though. After beating the number 2 team on the road, we travel to Middlebury, the number 1 seed. The Panthers ripped through Sacred Heart to win the right to host the tournament for the 6th straight year witha final score of 8-1. That game is March 3rd. Good luck guys, keep your heads up high. The Womens Basketball team is showing renewed life. They were down by 25 points to Navy, when something snapped into place. They scored 33 of the next 39 points when Navy fell asleep with 15 mintues left. Colgate would move on to stun the Midshipmen and complete the season sweep. This saturday, they met Lafayette, a team that embarassed us on our homecourt earlier this year. Faith earned her first career double double in her last regular season game. Spot tied a career record for points at 29. Colgate actually shot 45% from the floor, and was able to compensate for not making any three pointers by dominating from the foul line. The Red Raider's also got about 10 more rebounds than the Leopards. Colgate will meet Bucknell in the first round of the playoffs next weekend hosted by the United States Naval Academy. The rumor I've been hearing is that the Patriot League is going to move the site of the basketball tournament to a neutral location starting next year. The arena they have been looking at is the Show Palace Arena just outside of Washington DC in Maryland. Why the move to such a non central location? Perhaps they are worried about one of the teams leaving the league and want to try to recruit teams from that area to join. The positive is there is no home court advantage during the playoffs, but now its a pretty long trip and away from all the student fan bases. The Mens Basketball team has also earned a date with the Bison. Colgate lost to Navy in overtime, then pushed through Lafayette to claim the number 3 by the skin of our teeth in a tie breaker with Lehigh. Good rebounding by Colgate and poor shooting by Lafayette led to the win on the road. Colgate has been running full speed ahead down the strech, the game against Navy was one of the best I've seen this year despite the loss. The winner of our game will go on to face the winner of Army-Navy. The Cadets recently shocked the league by topping Holy Cross, which could either kill the Crusaders momentum, or serve as a wake up call. The Mens Hockey team loosened it's grip on the last playoff spot by getting swept by the top two teams in the league in last weekends road trip. We played well in both games, but we've reached the point where two losses are two losses. We are now in 11th place by 1 point heading into the last weekend of the season. Who is within striking distance? Princeton is 4 points ahead of us. They travel to Harvard and Brown this weekend, not much chance of catching them. Union is 3 points ahead of us. They could come out of this weekend with 0 points on the road against us and Cornell, but we need to beat RPI as well to make that happen. Looking at the ten spot, UVM is one point ahead of us for the final playoff spot. They are hosting Clarkson and SLU this weekend after getting swept by Yale and Princeton last weekend. If they get a 0 point weekend, we just need 1 tie or win to either pass them, or tie them in the standings. We beat them twice in the regular season, so the tie breaker would be ours. This would send us back to the North Country to try to prolong our season even more. So get out there and support your team this weekend, and that means get there early! We can't afford to be down 1-0 by the time our fans arrive. The Mens Lacrosse season opened last friday evening in the Carrier Dome against defending national champions, Syracuse. The team played hard, despite being out matched. We actually scored first, then struggled offensivly trying to get near the net. We were able to hold onto the ball for a while, controlling the tempo of the play. The defense was pretty good for us, holding Syracuse to 12 is not bad at all, especially with some of the shots they were taking. Colgate brought a large and enthusiastic crowd. After Colgate went up 1-0 they stunned the home crowd with a chant of "over rated". That was funny, but too many of them had a bit too much alcohol, and it had a negative effect on the crowd, who became too busy watching who was kicked out, or who threw up on who, to watch the game. It was unfortunate at best, and I heard a lot of negative reaction from the alumni about that one. Many of the players families travelled to watch the season opener, a 5-12 loss at the hands of the Orangemen. Dartmouth is up next... ECAC Survivor has been a big hit!! More so than I ever would have guessed. Over 70 people have registered on the first poll, and the first half of episode 1 has been read over 170 times. I don't know if you've ever gotten a feel for how many visitors this site gets, but I've been getting about 5 times the traffic since I put up the game. I wonder if I should confess using up all my best material already? The first immunity challenge will take place tonight, and one member will be voted off of the losing tribe on Wednesday. I'd like to close with one final story. This comes from the cheerleading coach, Jill Strand, and she was telling me about an encounter she had with a bear about ten years ago. The bear of course being the Cornell mascot. We were at a game at Cornell, and Colgate brought it's cheerleaders, dance squad and band for the big game. Before the game, during the National anthem, the Cornell bear ran over and stole the Colgate flag out of the cheerleaders hands. The bear then took it out onto the field during the national anthem, threw it on the ground, and began jumping up and down on it. No one knew what to do at the moment, since the national anthem was still being played. But Jill said she charged out onto the field and began yelling at the mascot, and took the flag back. Keep in mind aside from these two, everyone is standing still in silence. Jill got done yelling at the bear, and would later make sure that the person inside the costume would never get to wear it again. And people wonder why we don't like Cornell.... |
