Red Raider Sports Report for 2/4/01 |
||||||
Well, the mens hockey season isn't over yet, they proved that they can still beat up on Brown this weekend. Harvard was another disspointing game on Friday. Colgate outplayed the Crimson for 3 periods, but ran into another hot goaltender. Colgate got of 49 shots, but only 1 goal. Harvard had 1 powerplay goal, one shorthanded, and an empty netter to win 4-1. Brown capitalized on a Chad MacDonald penalty, to make it 1-0. Kelley evened things up 4 minutes later. And then the score was tied until early in the third, when Johns put the 'Gate up 2-1. With about 6 minutes left, a Brown player took a 5 minute major for checking from behind. Colgate would score twice on the ensuing powerplay. It was the first career win for David Cann, who won the starting role after Lefevre has struggled all season. Colgate is looking for a third goalie for next year, and one who will be getting starting time immediatly. The two point weekend for Colgate, as well as a 4 point weekend by Union, puts Colgate in 11th place in the league. If the playoffs began today, we would be playing golf. The Red Raiders have 9 points right now, Brown has been pushed to last with 6 points. Next weekend, Brown will be on the road at UVM and Dartmouth, so most likely a 0 point weekend for them. Union is 2 points ahead of us. They head to the North Country this weekend. So there is a chance for us to make up some ground, as we travel to Yale and Princeton. Yale and Princeton are both 3 points ahead of Colgate. Cornell is good for 3 or 4 points this weekend, so a Colgate 4 point weekend could bring us all the way up to 8th place. Yale is scoreless in thier last 2 games, losing 1-0 to SLU, and 6-0 to Clarkson. Princeton has given up the goals lately, losing 1-6 to Clarkson, but beating SLU 6-4. Our record against Princeton however, sucks. The door is wide open for us, if we can claim all 4 points this weekend, we are once again in decent shape for now. If we don't get those 4 points, we're going to be fighting tooth and nail down to the wire to even make the first round. So, if you are near Yale and Princeton, get out to the games and support your team! The pep band will be making the trip as well. The Mens basketball team beat Lafayette in a good game this wednesday, but fell to Holy Cross on Saturday. What was most dissapointing was that it was our court, and Josh Sankas did not play. Colgate made too many mistakes, and couldn't overcome the HC defense. The loss moves us to a tie for third in the league. We face Army at home this wednesday. This is a win you can't take for granted, as Army has been playing well lately. The Womens basketball team took it to league leading Holy Cross for the better part of the game yesterday. Our defense was forcing mistakes left and right. Holy Cross could not impliment any sort of game plan. The Red Raiders still didn't have much offense, and in the game wednesday vs Lafayette, they didn't even have any hustle. We're not doing all too much lately. But this wednesday we have a chance to crawl out of the basement with a win over Army. Army had a 5 game losing streak going until they beat Albany in a non league game. The Womens Hockey team took it to the competition this weekend. They shutout Colby 2-0, and then beat Bowdoin 4-2. Bowdoin broke Middlebury's winning streak after 5 year, when they tied them last weekend. This was the first chance I got to see the Red Raiders in a while, and I was impressed with what I saw. We had very good puck control and worked hard. Heather Murphy has dropped back to defense. She still filled her role well, and she still gets off some nice slapshots from the point. Colgate gained a lot of confidence as the game went on. I think our style has changed a bit, which is causing us to lose a little bit as we make the transition. But it's good to see us playing teams witht he style we are going to need to use next year, instead of playing them all like D-3 teams. I know we could probally still chase down most players if they got a small breakaway, but I'm almost glad we don't look like were running a powerplay when we are at even strength. Stay tuned next weekend, as we take on two more above average teams at home. And as something a bit special, they will be playing Friday and Saturday night, both at 7 pm. So if you are depreessed about the mens team not being around, why not give the women a try? Promises to be a good game. For only $1,750 I can have an advertising banner put in Cotterrel Court, out at Andy Kerr Stadium, and on the boards in Starr rink. I already have the slogan, but the money thing seems to be an issue. That slogan is "Cornell sucks, this website doesn't, the Red Raider sports fan site, www.oocities.org/redraider013" kinda catchy huh? Not a whole lot of recruiting news to report. Like I said, we will be adding a goalie to our ranks next year for hockey. Maybe we should pick up a womens goalie too while we are at it. On the football front, a article I found suggested that Michael Chrystie will be trying out for quarterback, if he's not good enough to start there, he will look to start elsewhere in either the offensive or defensive backfield, and probally kick as well. This guy is one heck of an athelete. Syracuse wanted him, but they could only guarantee him a shot at being the kicker. I also heard a rumor that Kilpatrick was also getting looked at by Syracuse. Two recruiting wins over Syracuse? Not bad. The recruiter of the week award has to go to Katrina Silva though, of the Womens Lcrosse team. I talked to one of our recruits yesterday, she was all Long Island two years running, and was also heavily recruited by Brown and Northwestern, but chose Colgate for the academic match. Undergrads at Brown would not be able to pick out thier professor in a police lineup. This person I talked to seemed like a true competitor, and smart to boot. Due to a mix of being humble, and hoping to surprise opponents, she requested I not give out her offensive figures, but she said if she finds she can't score at this level, she is a team player and doesn't care if she never scores, as long as she can help the team win. She also picked Colgate over some better schools and programs becuase she believes with our new coach, we will be heading to the next level, and she was just very impressed with the coach and team in general. The full recruits page is almost done, I'm thinking it will be presentable by next weekend, and will be maintained right up to the start of next fall. Thats it for this report. Next one is wednesday or thursday. |
