Red Raider Sports Report
                               for 3/1/01
It's make or break weekend for our winter teams.  3 winter teams are in the playoffs, one is struggling to get that last spot.

The
Mens basketball team hopes to extend a league leading 8 year streak of making the league semi finals by beating Bucknell in thier first round game.  Colgate is the number 3 seed, but lost to the Bison when we met them a few weeks ago on the road, prior to that we beat them at the buzzer at home, with Howard Blue out for most of the game with an injury.   But let's look at it this way, Bucknell was on a 2 game winning streak, played us, lost, did not win again until 7 games later, when they beat us, they have not lost since then.   Perhaps the worm will turn again?  But why don't we just ask Jordon Hardenbergh what he has to say on the issue?  The team has really showed a positive work ethic as of late, and they will win or lose, as a team.   A win will send them into a semi finals matchup with either Army or Navy.  There have been some rocky games this year, but just about everyone has improved a great deal.  The key is going to be Campolieta and Blue.  Their numbers have fluctuated a bit lately.  If they get shut down, we lose.  The Bison won thier last league game against Lehigh, in overtime.  They were beat in just about every statistical catergory except for turnovers, where Lehigh mistakes cost them the game.   This is a winnable game if we can control the tempo and work our plays.

The
Womens Basketball team will be meeting the Bison as well.  Last year a foul and travel cost Colgate the chance to upset them in the league semi finals.  They lost thier last league game to Lehigh.  The Bucknell offense can be mistake prone, but we need a good defense, Bucknell can kill you if you start taking fouls.  Our offense will need to be patient, and find it's shots.  Hopefully Colgate's success as of late will translate into a good game in the quarterfinals.  The winner meets the winner of Lehigh-Lafayette in round 2.

One of the most compelling stories of the winter is the
Womens Hockey team.  They recently upset the number 2 seeded Vermont.  And now they will face the number 1 team in division 3, Middlebury.   The winner of the saturday afternoon showdown will advance to the finals the next day.  Middlebury did reach 100 consecutive wins this year, but they also got their first tie, in a game against Bowdoin.  Can the Red Raider's pull off an incredible upset?  This should be a great game, one the team has worked hard just to get to.

The
Mens Hockey team faces a win or go home situation this weekend.  We are 1 point behind Vermont in the standings.  Vermont is hosting the North Country, so if they get swept, we just need one point to make the playoffs, but you can't count on that.  We meet Union first, a team that is also near the bottom of the playoff list.  Last year we pasted them 9-3 at home.  We're going to need something like that too happen.  But will there be much of a Colgate crowd there to help them out at the beginning of the game?  Get there early, be loud!  RPI is up on the second night.  They have struggled on the road this season, have had a few awful games, and did not look great last weekend.  They are also playing at Cornell first.  Colgate has just announced that they will be without Scooter Smith for the rest of the season, who is home due to a family emergency.   It's now time to go out and get some points, otherwise we are done for the season.

The
Mens Lacrosse team will be playing Dartmouth this saturday.  Dartmouth walked away with the win in a good game last year.  This is going to be the first good chance to see how Colgate stacks up against reasonable competition.

Let's hope for a good weekend from top to bottom.  I won't be doing any updating until Sunday when the band gets back from the basketball tournament, so if someone could post the hockey game scores, that would be great.  Have a good weekend!
