Red Raider Sports Report for 3/10/01 |
||||||
Time for a special pre spring break edition of the Red Raider sports report. I just realized I posted the last report without announcing it, so for those of you who did not read it, my last report has all the information from the final games of the winter season, but now, onto spring! One of the most interesting spring breaks to watch is that of the Womens Softball team. They have an 18 game road trip down south over break. Last year, following the spring break trip they were 4-10. They would battle back to 21-27, but this year the team has high expectations. They have a very solid core group of players returning, and a very good recruiting class. Many people are allready saying this is the best softball team we have had in the programs 20 year history. March 15th is going to be the most interesting game, when we mix it up with Texas A&M. They are currently ranked 19th in the nation, so if we are going to get some attention, this is the game to win it in. If we can perform well in this game, we might get some votes coming our way. This could be a very exciting season, and it starts with spring break. The Womens Lacrosse team also faces some tough competition on the road this week. Hofstra, Columbia, Ohio and Ohio State are the competition. Last year we opened the season witha win over Hofstra, while Ohio State was our lone home loss of the season. Many people are also looking for this team to strongly contend for the league title. We narrowly won the preseason vote, but our freshman class is said to be very strong. We've got a few all americans coming in, as well as many other impressive players. Can we make up for the offense we lost when Kate Manzella graduated and became an assistant coach though? The Mens Lacrosse team suffered a bad loss to number 9 in the nation,Cornell this past week. Cornell had scored 4 tiems before Colgate even touched the ball... They have 2 chances for redemption this week, facing number 24 Yale, and the University of Vermont over spring break. Will the warm weather down in Florida help Colgate find the net? Or will the team continue it's early season slide? Much as its hard to talk hockey with all the other teams buzzing around about the playoffs, with Colgate keeping Brown company on the sideline, I have some more recruiting news. Joey Mormina has joined the Colgate family. This 6 foot 4, 188 pound defensemen seems like a good catch. I've heard only good things so far. He seems to be a very good player, coming to us from a private school in New Hampshire. "JoMo" has been looked at by the Boston Bruins, and could be a possible draft choice for us. I'm just wondering why he waiting for this late in the game to commit. I've heard nothing but positives, maybe coaches shyed away from him becuase of the fact hes only 188 lbs. Or maybe hes slow, or violent, I guess we'll find out next year. But he looks like a good recruit. He is the second 6'4" defensemen we have coming in next year, and recruit number 11 overall. What does this mean? Well, it means poor Tucker Veenis is going to be back up in the press box watching the games next year. Coach Vaughan did say there would be no more recruits this year unless they were really able to contribute in my interview with him last month. This is going to throw off our balance though. Next year we will have more freshman than seniors and juniors put together. This is going to be an interesting class to follow. How interesting you ask? Pretty darn interesting I would say. I've begun work on two hockey articles, one looking at who we have coming back next year, taking a close look at the incoming freshman and how much we can expect them to contribute, and the other one is a surprise. I hope to have both done by next monday though. We also have more recruiting news for all sports coming in. Some interviews still on the horizon, and of course the Golden Gates are on the way! Your going to want to stay tuned for the next couple of weeks. But as for me, spring break awaits, I will be back probally later next week. Till then, head over to the message board and keep things active, the spring season will probally be the most successful of the three this year. |
