Red Raider Sports Report for 4/22/01 |
||||||
The Golf team was in the spotlight this weekend, competing in the PL championships at the Naval Academy golf course. Day 1 was good for the Red Raiders, as we pulled out to a 5 stroke lead over the host Midshipmen. 4 members of the top ten wore the Colgate maroon. They took the lead into the final day of the tournament, as the midshipmen fought to take the lead. Navy responded to the pressure, and overcame Colgate on the final 3 holes to win by a total of three strokes. Three Red Raider's finished in the top ten to gain all league honors, Eli Zackheim finished 3rd overall, Josh Polsinelli had a great tournament, finishing 6th, and Dan Cappucci finished 7th. It's been a great season, and it's not over yet, due to the fact that our own golf course has only recently been opened, allowing our team and others to enjoy the outdoors, we will be holding our own meet this tuesday, we will also be playing at Penn State this coming weekend. Congradulations for a great effort and a tremendous season. The Mens Lacrosse team came through with a nice win this weekend. They stunned preseason 31st in the nation, Lehigh, in Bethlehem. Lehigh has been struggling this season as well, but Colgate came through in the final minutes of the game. We survived a total of 8 ties, including a 10-10 tie with about 2 minutes left, Colgate scored the last 3. Obie Bate, whose scored 2 goals all season, exploded for 3 goals and 1 assist. Colgate made goals on both of their extra man opportunities, and dominated on the groundball. Another fine effort by Hettler, who made 5 4th quarter saves to keep us in the game and get the win. Another tough effort by the team, this one paid off, and Colgate get's its second league win. We now have two league games to close out the season. The Womens Lacrosse team closed out the regular season with a loss to Villanova. The Red Raider's stuck with them, but could not get the goals on the board. We end the season 2-3 in the league, good enough for the last playoff spot. That means another meeting with the Lafayette Leopards, this time in Easton. Colgate was picked to finish 1st in the preseason, and Lafayette was picked to be third. They are 11-3, and gave Colgate a beating at Tyler's field just a short while ago. A win will give us a rematch with either Villanova or Holy Cross. The Softball team had their series with Holy Cross this weekend. Game one was not the best for Colgate. There were no earned runs by either team, but Colgate had just 5 hits and for the 8th time this season got shutout. Tina Scharf had 2 hits, but it was not enough to give Elena Issac the win, she fell to 5-8. Game two was a key win for the Red Raider's who are desperatly trying to make the league tournament. Rachel Smith had 3 hits, Kaitlyn Mitchell had 2, and Melissa Rawson hit a three run homer. The home run being her 8th of the year, a Patriot League single season record! Beth Haas had an amazing night from the pitchers mound, striking out 7 and allowing just 3 hits. I cannot say enough good things about her, as she improves her record to 8-8. Game three and four were on Sunday. Wygant had the start, going 5 innings and giving up 1 run in game three. Beth Haas came in to get the final 6 outs, and take the win, as the Raiders scored 3 in the 7th to take the win. Paolucci and Wright both had 2 hits. Game two saw mistakes cost Colgate the game. Tiffany DeCoff, the same person who won the PL soccer championship for Holy Cross by shutting out Colgate at home, scored the game winning run, as the Red Raiders could only get 2 around the diamond despite multiple threats. Hass pitched all 7, striking out 4 and giving up just 4 hits. It was Issac who came up big at the plate with two hits. Rawson had just 1 hit and 2 errors. The Red Raider's scored both goals in the 7th, but there wasn't enough to avoid a 2-3 loss. If we want to make it to get to Patriots Park and the league tournament, we need to take 3 of 4 from Bucknell in our series next weekend. We have two tune up games this week, before the Spring Party Weekend battle with the Bison. The Mens Tennis team had the league championships this weekend. Another great performance by the Red Raiders, who were the host of the tournament. Lafayette was the first opponent, Colgate was ranked 3rd, while the Leopards were 6th. Freshman Eric Saccullo was at the number 1 spot for Colgate, and despite a case of the jitters, he pulled it out in three sets. Evan Paushter did not participate in singles action, to focus on the number 1 doubles match. Josh Cohn did not let illness bother him, as he got a crushing win in his match. In the end it was 4-1 Colgate. In the next round, we met Navy once again, Navy getting a 7-0 win earlier this year in a great match. Colgate took it to them once more, but lost 4-2. It was a good effort, but Navy was the better team, and Army bettered them in the finals. Colgate is in good position for next year, returning their entire team. Navy and Army are both losing a top player or two. The Womens Tennis team is now our last good chance for a league championship. The tournament is held at Bucknell and Colgate has already upset the top team in the league, but we did suffer an upset of our own. Can we do it? Can we win at least one league title this year? I remember being spoiled freshman year when we won 5, it's been decreasing since then, with every team lower than they were supposed to. The womens tennis team was picked for second, can they break the trend? Or all we saving all our kharma for next year? Stay tuned! Let's see what we've got in the bonus pile today.... Dorina Von Tersch is all moved out, leaving the Volleyball team without a coach. Dorina left for personal reasons, no word on what she plans to do. This is not a surprise. Colgate will enter next year with a whole new coaching staff. Dorina Von Tersch led Colgate to a league title and coach of the year honors two years ago, but the team did not have the same intensity this year, but overcame a very bad early season to make it to the league finals. A new coach has not been found yet, but the schedule for next year is set. It has a bunch of games against top opponents like this year, but there are a few more games in there that will be a bit more reasonable for our level. Scoreboard...scoreboard.....It's here! A brand spanking new scoreboard has been added to Cotterell Court. It looks very simmilar to the one in Starr rink, but is a bit larger I think. It sits right above center court, and the two scoreboards in the corners of the arena have been removed. We also have new shot clocks and all that jazz. The board looks very nice, a bit out of place, but hey, it's new. Ironically, it is the three patriot league schools that are not scholarship that have been doing the most to improve their facilities over recent years. Lafayette has recently completed the Kirby sports center, which looks very nice, and Bucknell is working on a facility of their own. Colgate has recently revamped Cotterell court, changing the bleachers and some other changes to the inside of the arena. There's also talk about doing some more stuff to the Reid Athletic Center, they need to add some more locker rooms and offices, they might also be moving the hall of honor over there, and putting in a lounge or redoing the lobby. |
