Red Raider Sports Report
                               for 4/10/01
Hello sports fans, time for another Red Raider sports report.  Spring has sprung at Colgate university, and the temperature is predicted to be above freezing all week! Exciting stuff, really.  We've got a lot to catch up on, as there hasn't been a ramblings for a while.

The
Golf team continues to roll through the spring.  Finishing second to Navy at Towson's tournament.  Dan Cappucci came in second overall after a playoff loss.   Things were a little bit on the dissapointing side at the Navy Invintational this weekend.  Colgate finished 8th of 14 teams, and behing both Navy and Lehigh.   The team has not been able to practice outdoors yet this season, and hopes the good weather will help give them a leg up for our own meet, a week from this tuesday.   It's our final event before the league championship.

The
Mens Lacrosse team wins!  The mens lax team wins!  Colgate breaks thier 8 game losing streak by extending Holy Crosses to 7.   Colgate had a whopping 63 shots in a 15-8 win.  The losing streak was the worst start the team has ever had.  It was extended by a 1 goal loss to Lafayette, and a loss in a hard fought game against Hobart.  There are 4 games left in the season, the next game being at home on Saturday against 9th in the nation, Bucknell University.   Looking at common opponents of out last few teams, we are somwehat in danger of not winning again, although a win over Albany and Harvard is possible.  It's hard to pinpoint where we have failed.  On paper, things aren't terrible, we have ten seniors on the team this year, many of them very good.  We do have a tough schedule and the league is not an easy one, not by a longshot.  Will we ever be competitive in mens lacrosse?  Right now it doesn't look like it, we have a pretty inexperienced defense and a rookie goal keeper this year, but next year we will have lost our top mid fielders and attack players.  Are we gaining anything from our tough schedule, or should we throw in some winnable games on the schedule, or is that what we tried to do this year?  Something just isn't clicking with this team.  The number of away games doubles the number of home games this year, so make the most of them, see you at the field on Saturday.

Ack!  What did the
Womens Lacrosse team do?  They let up an 11 goal run to Cornell, to get crushed by the Big Red, then managed just 3 goals against Holy Cross.  Holy Cross was picked to finish 5th in the league originally, but has shown to be much better than that.  Colgate did take a 16-6 win over Vermont.  Gaining some revenge for the mens loss, and hopefully regaining some momentum heading into the big game next saturday with Lafayette, our traditional league rival.  The team is currently 6-6, and still in good shape for a winning record this season.  There are just a few issues that need to be adressed before they make a run for the league title.

The
Softball team is now 4-4 in the league after sweeping Lafayette, but getting swept by Army.   During the weekend, Amanda Paolucci broke Colgate's career RBI record when she drove in her 77th run.   Congradulations to this junior, who has added so much to the team already.  Also in the spotlight was Melissa Rawson, who hit her 7th home run this season, setting a Colgate record for round trips in a single season, and the season is not even close to being over yet!  Even though we have fallen behind in the league, we have some out of conference business to take care of first.  We travel to Sienna and Syracuse this week, before hosting Lehigh this weekend.  The losses to Army were a dissapointment, and the team showed it's youth, fortunatly, there is time to iron out these problems on the way to the league tournament.  Let's just hope we finally have our home opener this Saturday.

The M
ens Tennis team blew past Bucknell last week, then got shut out by Navy in an incredibly good game.  Sure, the score was 7-0, but every game and match was very close.  Think that military training came in handy?  Most likely, but Colgate played a very good game against a team that is better right now.  Let's hope our guys were paying attention, so when we meet them in the league meet, we'll be ready to take revenge.  Colgate finished at 2-2 in the league, and the league championships are later this month right here at Colgate.

The
Womens Tennis team continues to battle through the league, the lone blemish on our record is a 4-3 loss to Lehigh.  Most recently, the Red Raider's took it to Bucknell and left with a 6-1 win.  The team has 2 meets left before the league meet, hosted by Bucknell.

The
Track and Field team turned some heads at the Colonial Relays this weekend.  The mens team finished 8th, led by Phinel Petit-Frere, who won the high jump, and freshman Waldermar Auguscinski, who took 4th in the shot put.  The womens team took 7th when Maura McCusker set a meet record in the 800 meter dash.  Both teams continue down the road to the league championships, and hope to improve on thier predicted league finish.

Things have been busy in general here.  Courses are pretty demanding right now, and geocities problems have put me farther behind than I want to be.  I have some recruiting info I'd like to get to at some point.   On the bright side, I was able to get to the Frozen Four this past weekend.  In the championship game,
Boston College defeated North Dakota in overtime to capture a title that had eluded them for over 50 years.  It was an amazing thing to be a part of.  And a very memorable experience.   I'm hoping for the next report to be done this weekend, as the league meets draw closer.
