MEN'S BASKETBALL

Season preview

Colgate is coming off a .500 season last year and a loss in the semi finals of the Patriot league tournament.  Colgate showed some big game potential though and is capable of having a good season.  They only lost 2 of their starters from last season.  They also had a very strong freshman class led by Jordan Harris.  This class should develope nicely and make Colgate a real Patriot League contender in the years to come.  Unfortunatly, last season's Patriot league champions, Layfayette, are also looking extremely strong this season.  With the tournament being held this year at Layfayette, they might be tough to beat.

Game by game review
November 19th - Dartmouth

Colgate started off strong but fell apart in the second half to lose the first round of the Mohegan Sun Tournament 68-65.

November 20th - Albany
The consolation game of the tournament.  Colgate once again dropped off in the second half, but still hold on to win 79-69.

Novemeber 23rd - Canisus
You gotta consider this a tough game for the Raiders going into it.  But Harris had a huge game including 33 points and 11 rebounds.  Colgate turned it up in the second half to hold off a Canisus comeback and won it 76 - 59.

November 29th - At Syracuse

The good old days of this being a close rivarly are over.  The top 25 Orangemen have won 35 straight meetings and this one was no different. 83-49 Syracuse.

December 2nd - At Delaware
Another game against a really good team.  Colgate picked up it's shot taking and is now a lot more consistant.  CU still picked up the 65 -56 loss which was still respectable.

December 6th - Long Island
Colgate looked like the better team but had a really poor shot percentage.  Not a lot of players were having a good game and LIU was playing with a lot of intensity.  Colgate performed better in the second half but still lost 62-58.

December 8th - At Siena

Colgate regained thier consistancy and a lot more players had good games.  Siena had some really good shot takers that Colgate could not stop.  Siena also had a large crowd at the game which may have been a factor in the 82 - 71 loss.

December 11th - At Harvard
This one surprised me.  Colgate had shooting trouble again, but Harvards was worse.  Green stepped up to a big game and Colgate really turned it on in the second half.  Colgate wins 76-49.

December 21st - Hobart
Hobart is to Colgate like Colgate is to Syracuse, catch my drift here?  Colgate was really strong on defense and did well on the other side of the ball as well.  No surprises here 80 - 57 Colgate.

December 23rd - At Manhatten
Colgate's 4th straight game scoring over 70.  Lots of turnovers this game.  Dave Hardy had his best game of the season. Harris led in points as usual,  lots of other Raiders kicked in too.  Colgate totaled 6 three pointers, many of which came at key times. Colgate took the lead for good halfway through the second half and pulled away to win 76-68.

January 4th - At Cornell
Both teams were tied at the end of the first half.  And at the end of the second half.  Finally Colgate pulled ahead to win in overtime.  Colgate shot well and was grabbing the rebounds a lot better than the big red.  Jordon Harris led the team in points as Colgate wins in OT 68-63.

January 8th - At Niagra
Senior Pat Campolieta scorded 25 big points to lead the team.  Jordon Harris added 19.  CU looked strong in the first half and carried a 4 point lead going into the locker room.  Niagra rallied in the second on offense and defense.  With 3 seconds left and the scored tied CU lost the ball and Niagra made a game winning layup.  A tough loss for the Red Raiders but it shouldn't hurt them too much overall. 63-61 Niagra.

January 12th - Holy Cross
A dissapointing game to kick off the Patriot league for Colgate.  Colgate held it's own on the boards but could not stop the Crusaders offense and had low shot percentage.  Colgate hit just two 3 pointers while Holy Cross made 7.  The biggest problem for CU was lack of offense.  Jordon Harris was the team leader with 15 points.  Not enough to top Holy Cross as CU losses 68 - 51.

January 15th - At Army
What can I say? Army hit 6 3 point shots, while Colgate has 0.  Colgate hung in there and made this an extremly close game.  Army also held the upper hand when it came to rebounds.  Aside from that Colgate played very well on offense and defense.sket from the baseline as time expired and Colgate left West Point with a 58-55 loss.

January 19th - Lehigh
Hmmmmm.. Jordon Harris is number 23, scores 23 points, anyone want to check to see whos using number 99?  Colgate stayed pretty close to Lehigh in the first half but pulled away by the second.  Lehighs offense just fell apart. Colgate grabbed more rebounds and shot allright.  One area of concern might be a under 50% free throw percentage, that was not enough to stop the Red Raider though, who win thier first Patriot league game 77-61.

January 22nd - Dartmouth
Jordon Harris and Pat Campolieta scored 17 and 14 respectivly and both had 11 rebounds to lead the team.  Colgate played well and had a nice lead going into the second half.  Dartmouth was able to close the gap a little but Colgate held on for the win, 60-53.

January 26th - at Bucknell
Lack of offense hurt the Red Raiders agaisnt the 12-7 Bison.  Pat Campolieta was the only one to see double figures with 12 points.  Colgate managed just 15 points in the first half.  The Raiders came back in the second but could not close the gap.  Another game of low shooting percentages and Colgate loses 45-62 and falls to 1-3 in the Patriot league.

January 29th- Lafayette
The Leopards are far and away the best team in the Patriot league this year.  Still a very respecatble performance by CU though.  The Red Raiders looked very strong on defense and on the boards.   Offense in the first half killed Colgate though.  Just 22 points and failing to connect on all 6 of your 3 point attempts are devastating in a game like this.  Colgate would match Lafayette in offense in the second but could not overcome the deficit and lost 64-58.

February 2nd- Navy

Colgate came close to pulling off yet another major upset.  Colgate seemed to be on a roll early on.  Navy was making some small mistakes that we took advantage of.  The bounces and calls were all going our way.  Navy would close the gap by the end of the half.   Colgate regained the lead and increased it all during the second but then Navy just decided to make a comeback.  For a while we were held scoreless and made some sloppy plays that resulted in Navy points.  Navy held on to win.  Interesting to note that it seems every time Jordon Harris does not lead the team in points, we lose.  He had 15 this game to Pat Campolieta's 16.  Colgate drops to 1-5 in the league with this 69-65 loss.

February 5th - At Holy Cross
Colgate was looking to avenge a loss earlier this year.  Colgate fought hard and always seemed to be able to pick up a couple of decent runs to pull away from the Crusaders.  Jordon Harris and Pat Campolieta both had 14 points to lead the team.  Colgate took the win and broke thier losing streak.  We are now 2-5 in league play after this 57-54 win.

February 9th - Army
Sophmore Pat Campolieta had one of the best games of his career so far.  20 points, 17 rebounds!  Colgate just rolled over the opposition.  They took the lead early and never gave it up.   They played strong all game and was shooting very well from the floor.  Colgate's lead grew and shrank and when the game was over, Colgate took the win 67-51.

February 12th - At Lehigh
Colgate dominated!  At one point they led by 28 points.  Pat Campolieta led the charge with 19 points  Pat Diamond and Jim Detmer both helped out with 12 points.  Colgate also hit 7 3 pointers and was shooting well all night.  Colgates defense also looked good.  All this led to a final score of 65-43 Colgate.

February 14th - At Navy
Lets go down the old checklist here...free throws- under 50%, shooting percentage- about 30%,  three pointers- none, rebounds- 14 less than the other guys.  Ouch.  Pat Campolieta led with 13 points and Rob Akers got 11 points and led the team with 8 rebounds, great night for him.  But an 18 point first half will get you every time.  The final score 81-47, Navy.

February 20th - Bucknell

With the TV cameras rolling, this was a different game.  Especially in the first.  It seemed that even the refs were making more calls to try to impress the viewers at home.  The result was ultimatly a very low scoring first half with Bucknell holding a slight edge.  The second was very exciting, the action was fast paced, and the fans were into it!  The Colgate lead finally slipped away and the game was decided in OT, where the Bison just looked better.  Colgate was led by Pat Campolieta and Jordon Harris, who scored 22 and 21 points.  Colgate had the edge in rebounds but wasn't shooting as well, they also missed several key passes.  Your final score is 75-71, Bucknell, in OT.

February 26th - Ithica
Colgate was unstopable!  Right from the get- go Colgate grabbed a commanding lead and never looked back.  Pat Campolieta and Jordon Harris scored 16 a piece.  Shooting percentages were also a lot better.  Ithica just looked bad.  They were fouling too much and couldn't pass very well.  Colgate poured it on to win 80-64.

February 29th - Albany

Albany hit 12 three pointers, 12!  Albany also shot over .500 from the floor, including those three pointers.  There was just no stopping them.  Pat Diamond led the team with 18 points.  Jordon Harris had 11 and led the team with 9 rebounds.  Colgate did fine on offense, rebounding and Albany had more fouls.  Still lost 86-70 though.  It wasn't a league game at least.

March 4th - Holy Cross at Lafayette
quarterfinals of the Patriot League tournament

Kinda a slow first half, lets just say, neither team was on pace to break 40.  Holy Cross had some tall guys, couldn't shoot though.  We'd foul him and he would miss the free throws.   About all he could do was dunk and rebound.   There just weren't a lot of shots.  Pat Campolieta was the number 1 man with 17 points, Jordon Harris was the only  other player to break double figures, with his 10.  Colgate dominates in the second.  Scores more than both teams combined got in the first and wins 58-49.

March 5th - Navy at Lafayette
semifinals of the Patriot League tournament

Navy is not Holy Cross, you cannot shoot under .350 from the floor and hope to win. Pat Campolieta and Dave Hardy led the team with 12 points each.  Colgate looked a step slow all night against the highest seed, Navy.  Colgate spent too much time passing and often did not even get a shot off.  There just wasn't much Colgate could do.  A score of 82-56 ends Colgates season.

Season review
Colgates underclassmen continue to develope.  How far they came along is up for debate.  Colgate looked good in some of the big games.  Thier final placement right in the middle of the league was a fairly good evaluation of how they did despite having a losing record.  Colgate will be losing just one player, Pat Diamond, who was a solid starter and the teams third top scorer behind sophomores Jordon Harris and Pat Campolieta.  The team has a lot of potential for next year, lets see how they use it.

Sophomore forward Jordan Harris leads Colgate to a victory over Ivy League opponent Dartmouth.
