October 25th, 1932 Colgate continues to improve game after game. This weekend, the Kerrmen dominated the Violets of NYU at Yankee Stadium, and won the game by a score of 14-0. Colgate used speed and deception, but was surprisingly able to match NYU in the power department. Bob Smith was the star of the game for Colgate, he was matched against the 200 pound Basillio Marchi, and frequently was able to knock him down, opening up holes for our offense, and cutting past him into the backfield to ruin many of NYU's plays. Colgate once again scored in the first quarter, this time just 3 minutes into the game. Colgate recieved the kickoff at our own 20, where the drive began. We tested the weak side of the NYU line, but were only able to gain minimal yardage. Fortunatly, a roughing the punter penalty gave us the ball at our own 40. Colgate then tried a little razzle dazzle. Bob Rowe started to run a line play, but then passed to Ask, Ask faded back, then fired a hard pass to Jack Fritts, who was exactly in the middle of the field. Fritts then outran the entire NYU secondary, making it 50 yards into the endzone untouched. Bob Rowe made the extra point. NYU was unable to get going on their next drive, and NYU was forced to punt after 3 plays. McNamera made one of his trademark punts that helped beat Colgate last year, and the Maroon team was forced to start from deep in their own zone. A 40 yard drive was capped by a very good punt of our own, that rolled out of bounds at the 5. On second down, NYU went for a deep pass that was intercepted by Ask at the 40. On the next play, Ask ran around end to the 25. That was the end of the first quarter, and when play resumed, Colgate continued to work deeper into Violets territory. Finally, it was another one of Andy Kerr's special plays that led to a 15 yard touchdown. Ask had made a pass to Fritts, but then followed the play, and the ball was lateralled back to him, and he ran it into the endzone. Bob Rowe once again kicked the extra point. The game then took a more defensive tone, Soleau intercepted a pass, but then NYU shut down our running game. The first half would end on that note. Colgate played much more conservativly in the third quarter. We controlled the ball, and the Violets barely got to touch it. We made a lot of running plays, and slowly ate up the clock. In the fourth quarter, Colgate turned to their second string to carry the game through. They handled it well, but NYU still held the ball most of the quarter. They tried for long passes, and finally connected to one, which was run to midfield. It was the only pass NYU made all game, and it was the only time they crossed onto our side of the field. When the game finally did end, the ball was at the NYU 7 yard line. The score was 14-0, but the statistics tell a different story. Colgate earned 15 first downs, while NYU only had 2. Colgate gained a total of 306 yards, but the Violets were held to 70. Colgate also made 5 interceptions. With his two extra points, Bob Rowe now leads the nation in that catergory. Colgate was able to beat the mighty NYU line on defense, and on offense, the wall held up long enough for our backs to play their little shell game, and completly confuse NYU. Even Walt Terry, a halfback for Colgate just 2 years ago, was unable to figure out who had the ball, and he was trained in Andy Kerr's system. You can only imagine how tough it must be for the Violets when they are trying to find the ball when they are on the field. When we did through the line, we were able to get right up the middle. Bob Rowe took some more time to pick his holes, but when he found them, he hit them with the force of a tank. The freshman team also had some success in a much closer game. The final score was 12-7, in favor of the Colgate yearlings. The game featured a battle in the air, and was a rough, tough game for both teams. With this win, the Red Raider's are now the top team in the east. Fordham suffered a bad loss to Michigan State. Harvard barely survived against Dartmouth, and Pitt was held to a scoreless tie with Ohio State. With the possible exception of Brown, Colgate should be able to beat all of it's remaining opponents. And none of our opponents have been able to score on us yet. With the Red Raider's season going the way it is, a trip to Pasadena for the Rose Bowl is not out of the question. Andy Kerr shocked the Colgate world by announcing that his pet dog Duke, who has faithfully stood by his masters side at every practice this season, is actually not an Airdale! In fact, the scottish coach reported that he was in fact a schnauzer, and was able to produce the pedigree to prove it. The dogs real name is Balbina Schauzerlust. This unexpected turn of events has certainly surprised all of us here. There are several parts of this game that still stand in my mind. Those of us who follow football, like to talk about teams "Clicking", however, this team gives a whole new meaning to the word. Not only are the plays run smoothly, but they are run at a very high speed, and to perfection. The play of the game has to be a defensive effort made by Winnie Anderson. NYU tried a long run around end, and the halfback had 4 men blocking for him as they came roaring around the corner, straight at Winnie Anderson. Anderson just dug his feet in, threw down the first man to his left, the second man to his right, the third man on top of the first man he knocked to the ground, he then went over the 4th blocker and tackled the ball carrier for a loss! The Red Raider's can now stop to breath for a little bit. But for Colgate, the action is just beggining. This weekend is homecoming, and the Red Raider's will take on Penn State. Penn State is good this year, but no one is predicting a win by the visitors. This will be the first chance for the Colgate fans to see Colgate's new plays we unveiled at the Lafayette game. Attendance is expected to be high. Prior to the game, the freshman and sophmores will have a pushball contest, and if the freshman win, they will be allowed to remove their black ties for the rest of the year. Practice this week will be lighter than recent weeks, with Kerr focusing on conditioning instead of contact. The challenge will be for them to keep up the level of intensity that has marked the last few games. Joe Hill is recovering from some broken ribs, and should be able to return this weekend, however, George Van Heusen is now in possession of that guard spot. Bob Samuel will return to practice this week, however, it will take him time to get back into playing form. The starting line up should be the same as last week, but expect more substitutions. There will be special events all week long as Colgate prepares for homecoming weekend. Return to the index page |
