September 27th, 1932 The Colgate Maroon team had no problem with the St. Lawrence 11 this past weekend. Not only did the Larries not score a touchdown, they did not even make a single first down. Colgate had 23 first downs, and 41 points, as the first, second, and third teams all saw a piece of the action. The first touchdown came quickly, as SLU fumbled on their own 23 and Vern Lee recovered it. On the second play after that, Whitey Ask threw a touchdown pass to Bob Samuel. Bob Samuel and Bob Rowe led the offense most of the first half, and Colgate's unique offense had SLU absolutly baffled. Saint Lawrence really did not know what to make of the lateral passes they faced. Colgate worked the play to perfection, passing the ball away instants before getting hit. The Larries were unable to figure out who had the ball on several occasions, and the Kerrmen drove the field several times. Colgate did not show any indication of rust, playing in their first game of the season, and the game was wrapped up by the time the teams left the field at halftime. The second team got to start the second half. And they were able to control the game as well. Rene Antolini got to go on one of his famous runs, leading his pursuers all over the field before completing the 75 yard touchdown run. Howie Conroy and Soleau connected on a lateral pass for a touchdown. In the 4th quarter, the first team returned to the field, and Bob Samuel plunged in from a few yards out to finish a 50 yard drive. The first team was taken off the field again, and the third teamers got a chance to play. Jack Fritts made a 22 yard kick return. The next play was an 11 yard run, and then Colgate brought out the razzle dazzle one more time when Ellis made a lateral to Jack Fritts, before Fritts got hit, he lateraled it away to "Dutch" Bausch, Bausch ran upfield a few steps, before hitting a third lateral pass to Clarence Anderson. Anderson then ran it in for a touchdown as St. Lawrence was still trying to figure out who had the ball. Jack Fritts also handled the punting duties, and he did a very good job with it. In the end, Colgate was victorious 41-0. Bobby Samuel was fielding punts much better this year than he did last. He is running much harder this season. Howie Conroy was also looking much better, and he is on his way to being a starter someday in a future season. Bob Rowe also seems to have improved his game, and when he hits the open field, he runs more like a halfback then he does a fullback. During the game, Colgate was penalized frequently for roughing, holding, and piling up. This was mostly due to Colgate not being accustomed to the new rules enacted over the summer. One spectator at the game was slightly dissapointed by the fans lack of spirit for an opening game. While we agree that the spirit at last years opening game was greater, we do not think that this is anything to be concerned about, and the All American cheering section should be back to show how they earned that nickname as Colgate gets to it's more important games. I almost, hate to point this out, but did you notice that the Colgate band is not, what some would call, snappy? They seem to be working hard, but do not seem to be very good. Colgate has had a band for many years, but they always seem to get looked down upon by their fellow students. Despite their desire to show spirit, they have a hard time recruiting new members. For some reason or other, there is not much honor attached to being in the band, and even though many members of the campus community can play musical insturments, most ignore the call for recruitment. It even seems as if some people in the band, cringe at the thought of being in the band uniform. The band has been petitioning for members to recieve a charm or letter for their services. Hopefully this will improve the bands status. It should also be noted, that even though most people do not seem to hold the band in high regard, they will raise hell should the band fail to appear at a game or event. Because the community clearly desires a snappy band, and students who can join the band should fullfill their Colgate duty and join them. And if you cannot do so, please show your support and cooperation for this valuble part of the Colgate football experience. To move on to a lighter story, do you remember last week when I issued a reminder to make sure you had your pass books in order to be admitted to the game? Well, for a while it had seemed as if three men had not heeded my warning, and tried to gain access to the field without the proper tickets. The gateman did not believe the men's claims to belong at field level, because they were dressed for golf, and not football. The gateman even had to summon Bill Reid, when the three strangers refused to leave. Mr. Reid let them in immediatly of course, because he recognzed them as, yes, you guessed it, the three officials. Did I mention that Colgate was heavily penalized in the game? Completly unrelated, I'm sure. In other sports news, Rodger George played a very good game for SLU, and the former Colgate student played a good game, and without major incident. Syracuse easily won it's season opener against Clarkson. The field conditions were less than ideal, but the Orangemen were clearly the bigger team. That Lew Stark is one big and scary looking guy. Next weekend, the Maroon will take on the Case school of applied science from Cleveland Ohio. Case won it's first game of the season, by defeating Hirim 32-0. That is it for today's report.
