WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Season preview
Colgate lost some of thier best shooters last year but will have two big seniors as forwards for this years campain.   They have a somewhat smaller program this year but a lot of intensity.  Most of that intensity coming from sophomore Sarah Parks which is lifting up the whole program. A lot of younger players are showing a lot of promise as well.  Add in an experienced point guard and Colgate is hoping to move up in the Patriot league this year.

Game by game review
November 20th - At Boston University

Colgate started off with a tough opponent.  4 players saw double digits on offense. But Boston had two huge point scorers that Colgate could not stop.  78- 58 BU.

Novemeber 23rd - Canisus
Colgate was lacking on defense again but was doing amazing with the ball.  Senior Hollie Young and junior Frances Boone both scored 20.   Freshman Alison Hanson scored 15 and the sophmore class was represented by Sarah Parks, who scored 12.  You simply cannot top offense like that.  Colgate 84- 80.

November 28th - Iona

Colgate was consistant on offense.  Colleen McCaffery had an amazing 17 point game.  The defense still wasn't there though.  Iona was allowed to shoot over 30 free throws in the second half compared to 12 from Colgate.  Iona takes the win 77- 67.

November 30th - Binghamton
Colgate was not defeated by Binghampton in any of thier previous meetings but have been looking good this year.  CU suffered from a low shooting percentage and again got called on a lot of fouls.  Too many things were out of place and BU got the win 68 - 52.

December 3rd - At Texas Christian
Texas Christian Tournement

Well, it was their tournament, and you usually invite schools you can beat.  And gosh they were good shooters and they were in Texas, where it's hot...have I distracted you enough yet to avoid having to tell you the final score?  On the bright side, Colgate did not commit nearly as many fouls and point guard Frances Boone scored 23 points if that makes you feel any better.  Ok, fine, heres the final...91-58.

December 4th - At Jackson State
Consolation game

Colgate took advantage of the second game.  Almost no fouls for Colgate.  Ali Hanson led the team with 19 with Boone and Parks accounting for most of the other baskets.  Hollie Young used her height to snag 9 rebounds.  The Red Raider's take home the win 55-49.

December 7th - At Quinnipiac
Low shooting percentages cost the team again.  Parks led in points and Young made double digits in both points and rebounds.  Not a whole lot of mistakes were made by Quinnipiac though, and Colgate fell 65 - 46.

December 11th - Marist

I gotta say Colgate was almost too good for Marist and it actually cost them.  The refs were also in a whistle happy mood, which hurt the intense Raiders much more. Colgate saw an early lead but it slipped away with foul trouble looming for the Raiders.  Marist did catch up at one point but Colgate turned it up another notch and was really in the zone as the game winded down! 64- 51 Colgate.

December 19th - At Niagra
Niagra was very efficient in this game.   They made over 90% of thier foul shots.  Colgates shooting percentage went up but they failed to get as many shots off. 83 -57 Niagra.

December 30th - At LIU

Frances Boone set a personal record with 27 points.   Colgate was down by a considerable amount early on but showed how far the team has come by rallying back.  Colgate had the lead by halftime and would not give it up once in the second half despite some good plays by LIU.  Colgate stuck it out and wins 59-55.

January 7th - At Drexel
You'd have to say colgate was going up against a tougher opponent tonight. Frances Boone led the team in points with 18 and Sarah Parks and Colleen
McCaffery each added 11.  Drexel had a large lead at the half and Colgate did a good job closing the gap.  It wasn't enough and Colgate takes the loss 61-58.

January 12th - Holy Cross
Time to start off on the 99- 00 Patriot league campain.  Colgate was lead by Sarah Parks who scored a personal best 25 points.  Unfortunatly no other Red Raiders saw double figures in the scoring column.  Low shooting percentages plagued the rest of the team.  Colgate out scored the Crusaders in the second half but could not overcome the deficit and lost 75- 60.

January 15th - at Army
Colgate looked like they were about to win the game when they were up by 10 halfway through the second half, but that lead slipped away and the game went to OT where Army took the game.  Colgate played intense and looked good, but just wans't polished enough.  There were several times when Colgate stole the ball, only to give it up on the next pass.  They also had a hard time stopping the Army offense.  Colgate looked really good near their basket though and passed well and a lot of played scored high, but still, the final score 68-63, Army, in overtime.

January 17th - Columbia

4 players scored in double figures to assist Colgate in this game.  Colgate just looked great on offense all night.  Rebounding proved to be the teams only weakness as Columbia dominated on the boards.  Colgate put too many in for that to matter. 71- 62 Colgate.

January 19th - Lehigh
Colgate has one of the most well rounded offenses in the Patriot league.  McCaffery led the team with 18 points, but 3 others joined her in double figures and two others had 9!  Colgate was also shooting well and was able to hold their own on defense.  Colgate wins their first Patriot league game 71- 60.

January 22nd - At Albany

Colgates offense continued to produce big numbers.  Frances Boones led the team with 16 points and McCaffery and Hanson followed with 15 and 14, respectivly.  Senior Hollie Young scored 11 points and led the team with 8 rebounds. Perhaps even more impressive is the fact that every single player on the team scored at least once.  Colgate was down 10 at the half but came back to win it 67-64.

January 26th - At Bucknell
Bucknell isn't at the top of the Patriot league for no reason.  Colgate really raised thier level to meet the Bison and give them a great game.  Frances Boone once again led the scoring with 18 points.  Laura Rohrbacher also had a great game with 12 points and co-led with 8 rebounds.  Colgate played very well and came close to pulling off a big upset.  In the end, Colgate allowed the Bison to take almost twice as many free throws as they did and significantly more rebounds.  Look for a big rematch at home on Satuday the 19th at 1 pm.  Colgate losses this one, 59-57.

January 29th - Layfayette
We still don't look as polished as we need to be.  But we are still doings great at passing the ball around and taking smart shots.  Colgate just always seemed to know where to go to snag the rebound too.  The score was tied at the half but CU would double the leopards in scoring in the second.  Some tense moments, but Colgate ended up winning by a impressive final score of 67-49.

February 2nd - Navy
All 5 Colgate starters scored in double figures again.  Colgate was shooting well, while Navy held the advantage on the boards.  The score was tied 26-26 at the half.  Foul trouble by Navy and a solid game by Colgate helped the Raiders take, hold, and expand the lead.  Sarah Parks played all 40 minutes and had 13 points to lead the team to a 61-55 win.

February 5th - At Holy Cross

The second meeting this year between these two teams wasn't much differant than the first.  Colgate stayed close to Holy Cross early in the game but would then fall behind and could never quite catch up again.  Colgates offense was looking good once again but they could not stop the Crusaders.  The final score, 79-62 Holy Cross.

February 9th - Army
Colgate took some time getting into the game, but once they did they were unstopable.  Sarah Parks led the team in scoring with 22 points despite a very scary looking injury that put her on the bench for  a while. Senior Hollie Young also had a great night scoring 20 points and leading the team with 7 rebounds.  Colgate maintained a large lead at several points during the game.  They ended the game with an 11 point run to take the win 80-66.

February 12th - At Lehigh
Way too many fouls for Colgate.  The Red Raiders lost a 10 point lead at the half as Lehigh scored a monster 55 points in the second half.  Colgates offense looked good.  Sarah Parks led the team with 20 points.  Nothing could stop the Mountain Hawks though, as Colgate falls, 80-67.

February 14th- At Navy

Colgate played strong in this low scoring game, but they could not hold the Midshipmen in the second half.   Sarah Parks led the team again with 15 points.  Colgate had about 20 more shots than Navy but had a lower shooting percentage and Navy had about 20 more rebounds.  A strong second half by Navy leads them to a 61-50 win over the Red Raiders.

February 19th - Bucknell
Colgate looked like they lacked focus early on.  Despite some technical problems, they still stayed ahead of the heavily favored Bison.  Sarah Parks led the team with 24 points, while Frances Boone added 16 more.  The second period was a see saw battle and one of the best games of the entire season.  Colgate broke a tie late in the game, then Hollie Young snagged a key rebound and put the game out of reach.  Colgate pulls off the upset 69-66.

February 26th - Stony Brook

Colgate got off to a slow start again.  Missed passes and mental mistakes put the team in a hole early in the game.  Colgate would play well, but never seemed to make up the difference.   Colgate did not make any 3 pointers, which cost them by the end of the game.  Sarah Parks was the team leader with 28 points and 5 rebounds.  Colgate was shooting well and was given pleanty of foul shots.  In the end, they came up just a little short.   Colgate loses a high scoring heartbreaker 76-73.  This concludes the regular season.

March 3rd- Army at Lafayette
Patriot League quarterfinals

Colgate was seeded #3, marking what has allready been one of the most successful seasons in Colgate womens basketball history.   The game started out very well for Colgate.  Less than 10 minutes in and Colgate is winning 18-2.  Army would not be done though.  The gap was less than 10 at halftime.  Army just looked like they couldn't shoot.  They got going in the second, but Colgate responded with some offense of its own.  Sarah Parks scored 17 points and had 9 rebounds, she also fouled out, setting a school record.  Senior Hollie Young had 8 points and 10 rebounds.  Colgate won 89-77.

March 4th - Bucknell at Lafayette
Patriot League semi-finals

Colgate fell behind early and was never quite able to catch up.  Young and McCafferey had 15 points.  Frances Boone added 14 points while Ali Hanson had 12 points and led the team with 12 rebounds.  Colgate shot very well but wasn't doing so hot on defense.   Fouls cost the team greatly as Bucknell went to the line twice as much as Colgate did.   Colgate outscored the Bison from the floor but Bucknell made 14 more free throws.  3 Colgate players fouled out.  The score was tied briefly near the end but mental mistakes and fouls ended up putting the game away for the Bison 69-66.

Post Season report

This was a year for Colgate to be proud of.  The team played with heart and determination.  The 6-6 record, 3rd seed was a great accomplisment for the team.  Things are only going to get better next year. 5 out of the 7 regular players will be returning.  The team is losing its top rebounder and 3rd highest scorer.  They will also be giving up some height.  The returning starters should be able to fill the gap.  Most of the teams mistakes this year could be attributed to inexperience.  It was a great run and we are looking forward to next year allready!

Junior guard Frances Boone tries to lead Colgate to an upset victory over the Bison of Bucknell.  Her 18 points weren't enough, as the great Red Raider effort fell short by 2 points.
