What is wanted is not the will to believe but the wish to find out, which is the exact opposite. - Bertrand Russell

Here are some interesting scientific publications I would recommend reading, if you have the time...

Intracellular signalling as a parallel distributed process. Bray, D.  J Theor Biol. 1990 Mar 22;143(2):215-31.
A very useful way of looking at cell signalling pathways, providing a rationale for crosstalk and evolutionary flexibility. Some idea of the functioning of neural nets is helpful but not essential.

Emergent properties of networks of biological signaling pathways.  Bhalla US, et al.  Science. 1999 Jan 15;283(5400):381-7.
An example of why it is important to consider not just at the individual pieces of data, but the implications of all the known data put together.  If the resulting model accurately predicts the behaviour of the system, you've learned something new, and if it doesn't, your data is incomplete.

Evolution and the origins of disease.  Nesse RM, et al.  Sci Am. 1998 Nov;279(5):86-93.
Excellent article (full text online), I especially recommend this to anyone in the health profession.

...FYI - here is part of something I got from the people who maintain this service, that I could sign up for if I wanted to pay for it - I have not done so, but if they can do it, I am sure a lot of the other sites you visit are doing so (Homestead is the term they use for homepage)...
If you could find out anything about your Homestead's visitors,
what would you want to know: Who they are? When they visited?
How they found you? You can learn all this and more with the
new Site Statistics tool from GeoPlus. Choose from 12 detailed
reports provided in graph and text format. View statistics by
hour, day, week or month. Collect info about your visitors'
browsers and operating systems. And here's something really
cool: Find out who sent them -- which search engines, search
keywords and referring URLs led them to your Homestead. Take
a closer look at Site Stats and the rest of GeoPlus, the
premium service from Geocities:
