Tomokazu Ohka won his third straight decision, going five and a third innings, and yeilding only five hits, one run, and two walks. It wasn't his best start of the year, but it was still another stride in the right direction for the young pitcher. I would have liked to see him get thru atleast the sixth or the seventh, but like most of the non-Pedro starters, they just don't seem to be able to get past the fifth.
Alot of fans and non-fans complain about how our starting pitching has pitched the least amount of innings in all of baseball, and that our leage leading ERA is misleading becasue of Pedro and the pen.
I both understand and don't understand this argument. Yes, when you think of ERA you think of the starters, and i belive if you take Pedro out our starters ERA is 5.00+ But it's called a STAFF ERA, so you have to factor in Pedro and the pen. Besides ERA is calculated over a full nine innings. Yeah, if a starter gives up three runs in two innings his ERA will balloon. But if the pen then holds the opposition to nothing for the rest of the game then that's only three runs over nine innings, which is pretty damn good. So I don't want to hear this crap about how it's all Pedro and the bull-pen, becasue we know, and it's a good thing. We lead the American League in staff ERA!
Oh and I also don't want to hear about how our pen is going to get tired as the year goes on. We're about a week from the month of September and their still going strong.
As far as offense went last night, there wasn't much, but it was enough for the win. We were lucky we got to Ramon "little pedro" Ortiz early, as he got real tough as the game went on. He seems to have our number, as he was killed in his two previous starts.
Tonight the Sox are in Kansas City with Pedro on the mound. We need to keep things in gear, get another win out of this one, and start gaining some ground ont he Yankers. Game time 8:05pm EST.
