As the Sox stormed back in the eigth to cut the KC lead to four you couldn't help but think what if the correct call was made. The Royals would have atleast three less runs, and in a one run ball game, the aura of the game changes a bit.
Nontheless an umps bad call still doesn't make up for another bad outing for Tim Wakefield. Before the game the Sox broadcasters said he could be fighting for a spot in the rotation, as the pending comebacks of Saberhagen, Ramon, and Schourek loom on the sidelines. For two of them, I doubt we'll see them again this year, but Ramon will need to be placed somewhere and Ohka has been too good to take out.
Now i've been a Wakes supporter from the get go, and i'm not going to quit on him now. It was Wakes who stepped up big time when it seemd out entire staff went on the DL and ran off four straight victories earlier this year. We all know knuckleballers are streaky, and that they're usually around the .500 mark in terms of record, Wakes still has a few good starts left in him this year.
Kind of ironic though, three weeks ago nobody would have been able to say that it's not the bats its the pitching that hasn't been geting it done. If we could only get both running on all cyliders at the same time.
Tonight the Sox move on to Tampa Bay, going into this seven game road trip I had said the Sox would need to go 5-2 to stay around in the race, which meant I was looking for three of four in KC. We didn't do that, but we can still pull off 5-2 with a sweep of Tampa. Won't be easy, but it's doable. Tomo Ohka gets on the hill tonight to begin the sweep at 7:15pm EST.
