Well they never want to make it easy on us. I was at yesterdays game, and had they blew it again in the ninth, I would have gone completely nuts. Actually I probably would have restrained myself as much as possible, I was at the game with my Dad. I was taking him to our annual game we go to for his Birthday. They won, so I guess I should be happy.
The hero of the day was Brian Daubach who slammed a three-run shot off Mike Hampton in the 6th inning. But Daubach should never have been in the game, or atleast not at that spot in the batting order. As i'm sure everyone has heard by now, Carl Everett was ejected in the 2nd inning yesterday by the home plate umpire. The argument was over whether Everett was in the batters box or not. Manager Jimy Willimas thinks the Mets set up the whole altercation by questioning his stance on Friday night's game. He has the same stance all year and it's never been an issue, until yesterday.
The biggest problem now is that Everett both bumped and head-butted the ump during the argument. I was there and had a close enough look to see it was more of Everett not being able to do anything but get into his face, rather than trying to hit him. But we know good ole Frank Robinson isn't going to take that into consideration, and that the ump did a bit of acting himself.
Braves manager Bobby Cox is currently serving a five game suspension for barely scraping an ump earlier this year. With what Carl did, you can bet atleast on a 10-12 game suspension when it's all said and done.
Lost in this whole mess whas another good outing by Ramon Martinez. Other than losing a bit of his control in the first, Ramon was great. He went six innings, allowing only the two earned runs he let up in the first. I'm not real sure why Jimy took him out in the seventh, he started the inning and gave up a lead-off single. Must have been a pitch-count thing, but Ramon didn't look happy about it either way, neither was the crowd.
We were further incensed by Jimy when in the ninth, and El Guapo on the mound with two-out and a man on first. Jimy took him out and put Derek Lowe in. Why are mamagers brainwashed into thinging the closer has to some in, in every save situation? Lowe got the save, but not before giving us a real scare. He allowed one of his inherited runners to score, along with another of his own. The game ended with the go-ahead run at the plate. Jimy blew it on Friday, and almost did it again yesterday.
But we won that's the result we shold be most concerened with. I'm sure Everett will appeal the suspension and will play until he decides to sit out, so we'll have him back today vs the Expos. As much as the whole situation sucked, hopefully this lit a fire under this teams ass. Something they sorely need.
