I'm going to do everything I can to not sound like a spoiled brat here, but I know i'm going to fail miserably. By Pedro's standards, i'd say he was above average last night, but not great. Had any of our other starters been on the mound and threw that game, it wouldn't have been anything short of amazing. I know it's just that fact that we've been completely spoiled by the best pitcher in the game for three years, but the three walks is really bugging me for some reason. Man, what an ingrate I sound like.
But other than that, Pedro was Pedro last night, going eight innings, yeilding five hits, one earned run, three walks, twleve strikeouts, and finally recording his tenth win of the season. The Sox bats continued to get little support for Pedro, but I think that is more a testament to Expos pitcher Javier Vazquez than anything else. Vazquez is a promising young arm, and has come into his own this year. Last night's performance dropped his ERA to 4.17, by today's standards, that's pretty damn good.
There were chances to score more runs, but some good defense from the Expos prevented that and kept the game close to the end. The biggest blow of the night, and it really can't be called a blow, rather skill and hustle that got the winning run across. With the score locked at one in the seventh, Bernard Gilkey lined a shot up the middle that hit Vazques and ricochet into right field. Gilkey, hustling all the way saw that the ball just died when it hit the outfield grass and hustled it into a double.
Next, Ed Sprague hit a fly to right, deep enough for Gilkey to tag and go to third. Next up was Darren Lewis, and to everyone's surprise the rarely seen suicide squeeze play was on. The pitch was awful, but DLew had to make contact for the breaking Gilkey. Not only did DLew make contact, but he managed to get the ball in fair territory allowing Gilkey to score the go-ahead run.
That would be all the Sox would need but just as insurance, Nomar doubled with two-out in the eight and then Troy O'Leary came up with another huge hit, driving in Nomar from second. Troy missed a home run by about a foot in centerfield, but the ball just didn't carry enough to leave the yard, but it was enought to do the job.
From there Derek Lowe took over and shut the door on the Spos, the series, and brought the Sox current winning streak up to four games. The Sox go out to Baltimore for a short two-game set starting tonight. Pete Schourek is scheduled to take the hill against Sidney Ponson at 7:05pm EST.
