It was almost another wasted effort, almost. But the bats woke up in the nick of time and the pen was able to just barely hold it together and get us a great come from behind victory.
Another lefty kept us at bay for pretty much the the whole game as we mustered little or no attack each inning. But we got the hits when we really needed them and Tim Wakefield, once again, pitched a very strong game. Wakes is still having problems with the long ball, he gave up three more last night, but two of them were solo shots and the other a 2-run job. So if you're going to give up the bomb, do it the way Wakes did yesterday, with as little dammage as possible.
The game was crusing along without much offense, Nomar was doing his normal ball ripping, and Bernard Gilkey actually came up with another RBI, and in a big spot to boot. With two-out in the third and runners on 2nd and 3rd, Gilkey blasted one off the left field wall to plate Nomar and O'Leary. Nomar later tied the game at three with his fourteenth homer of the season. The lead was quickly grabbed back in the seventh when Wakes gave up his third homer of the game.
So to the ninth we went, and after a quick out to Jose Offerman, Gilkey of all players, got another hit. Varitek and his abysmall average with men on base, then promptly line a ball of the right field wall scoreing Gilkey from first. Tek with a very bad base running error, was caught in a run down between 2nd and 3rd and the game went to extra innings.
After Darren Lewis made a quick out, Manny Alexander deposited a ball between the left fielder and short stop for a base hit. But the left fielder, Jason Christiansen, bobbled the ball and Alexander hustled it to 2nd. After and intentional walk to Nomar and a fly-out by Hatteberg. Troy O'Leary came to the plate with the go-ahead run on 2nd. O'Leary promptly line a single up the middle and put the Sox in the lead for good. Is it me or has Troy pretty much kept this team afloat? Minus his post DL performance, we're sunk for the season.
Derek Lowe came on in the bottom of the inning and struggled, loading the bases before getting the final batter to strike out on a nasty outside pitch. Pedro is on the mound tonight, hopefully we can grab another game on the Yanks, game time 9:00pm EST.
