What are the Red Sox going to do with Schourek? True our hitting didn't exactly provide any support in the early innings, but still a starting pitching for a playoff contender needs to last more than 1 2/3 innings.
Schourek will probably be demoted to the bullpen for a while to split lefty work with Cormier. Kerrigan will work with him try to figure some things out and hopefully we will pitch effectively again. Pichardo was wonderful. He has been one of the best pitchers on the staff since Pedro went down. Florie and Garces also pitched great. I am not really surprised of El Guapo's performance. Looking at the numbers, he is arguably the best middle relief in the game. Zimmerman made the all-star game last year, Garces definately could have made it.
Watching from the outfield unfriendly bleachers, I noticed this was not the Twins we were playing. Better hitters and better pitchers. Tom glavine is a very good pitcher, but still we only had two hits through 5 2/3 innings before Burkhart got a hit in the sixth. Yes, he was stranded. Glavine induced so many ground balls I have to give him credit, we can still get hits, but we didn't.
Bottom of the first, Offerman led off with a single and I was ready for a blowout. After Frye hit into a double play, Glavine walked two and hit Burkhart to leave the bases loaded while Gilkey struck out looking. LOB, the stat Red Sox fans hate this season. Starting off the first inning leaving three on base. In the second, Sprague walked and Offerman got another single. That's it, nothing else until the Burkhart hit in the sixth.
In the eighth Offerman and Frye got back to back singles for the Red Sox. After a pair of fielder's choice groundballs by Everett and Garciappara the excitement continued when Glavine, Rocker, and Ligtenberg combined to walk in two runs before the Sox left the bases loaded once again when Varitek flied out.
So we lost the game, the Jays lost and the Yankees won. We are now 2 games back on New Tork and 1.5 back of Toronto. There is a good chance we can regain a position at the top of the AL East. A Ramon win against Mulholland tonight and Wakefield over Maddux is possible. Gooden and Pettite also need to lose this weekend.
This afternoon's game is slated for a 1:05pm ET start with Ramon Martinez on the mound. We are hanging on to the East by a shoe string, let's go Ramon.
