The Sox got one run in first, third, and fourth inning. The first couple by spraying hits around, and the third on a monster shot into the seats by Dante Bichette. I just wish he'd have some base runners on when hitting these, I believe of his five Boston homers, four have been solo.
Thru five innings Pedro hadn't allowed anoyone to reach base, but some questionable non-strike calls and a pitch left in the wrong part of the zone to David Segui later, the score was 3-2 Sox.
The big offensive explosion came in the sixth inning after Cleveland starter Charles Nagy had left the game. Which actually was kind of discouraging, as Nagy was pitching in his first game since late April/early May, and the Sox could only muster three runs off what was basically batting practice. Such has been the season. But thanks to the Indians pen, which has been pretty suspect all year, the Sox were able to put the game away with six straight two-out his in the sixth. The biggest blow coming off the bat of Carl Everett (4-5 2R 3RBI 2B HR SB), who put a rocket shot into the second deck in right field with a man on base.
Pedro would give up one more run for the night and the pen (Rod Beck) allowed one run as well, but that was it for the Tribe as Derel Lowe got the final four outs of the game to pull the Sox back to within two games of the Wild Card.
Tonight the Sox head into Detroit for a four game set with the Tigers (double header on Saturday). With the Indians heading to New York this is the perfect opportunity to gain some big ground. Early in the year we more than handled the Tigers, but that was also during the Sox only "hot streak" of the year, and the Tigers worst "cold streak". Since the break the Tigers have been the best team in the AL, though they've cooled off of late, this is no series to take lightly.
Double knuckleball action tonight as Tim Wakefiled takes on Steve Sparks, this is not an eviable task for the likes of Jason Varitek and Brad Ausmus (both teams back-stops). Hopefully the large confindes of Comerica Park will benefit Wakes, and since the Sox don't hit many homers of their own anyway, it won't really affect us. Game time 7:05pm EST.
