The order of the day was a nice dose of Pedro. Yet again Pedro proved why he is the best pitcher in the game, tossing yet another gem. His line for the day 8IP 6H 1ER 1BB 11K and his 16th win of the season. Meanwhile Pedro's only possible nemesis for the Cy Young Award, David Wells, was absolutely shalacked by the Athletics 10-0. Wells gave up seven earned runs in an inning and a third of work, wilting what little hope he may have had of edging Pedro.
As for the rest of the game, the Sox as usual had only one inning of offense, but it was enough. They say sometimes it's better to be lucky than good, and today that cliche was never more true. In the fifth inning, the bases loades, one out, and Jose Offerman at the plate, luck finally played in our favor. Offy hit a hard liner deep to center field which should have ended up being a sacrafice fly. But Mariners center fielder, Mike Cameron, lost his footing and tripped, allowing the sure out to hit the ground and clear the bases.
The next batter, Carl Everett, then lined a shot off the monster (inches from a home run) to score Offerman from third, and Nomar Garciaparra finished off the scoring for the inning with a single to right, scoring Everett from second, and ending his no-RBI streak of over two weeks.
From there it was all Pedro. Other than one bad pitch in the seventh to Mike Cameron which landed in the screen, the game was never in question.
If we can just start scoring runs more consistantly we can run away with this thing. We had four very strong to great pitching performances over the long weekend. Arrojo's gem on Friday, Ohka with another strong performance on Saturday, Ramon with a incredible return from a month on the DL, Sunday, and Pedro's umteenth stellar performance on Monday. Out of it all we split the series 2-2, if we want to get into the play-offs we're going to have to start scoring runs for these guys.
Pete Schourek returns from an extended DL trip to start off a two game series with Oakland tonight. I'm not going to expect too much out of this start, I for one, figured Shourek was out for the year. I think he may be kidding himself trying to pitch thru the pain, but I guess we'll see. The offense is going to have to score some runs to give him some lee-way. Just Win Damn It!
