Brown Helmuth

"For fractured limbs...check the bone's position and move into place if needed..." Helmuth peered at the page a little closer...unsure of the next word. Since he'd first suggested learning to read...M'sey had spent hours teaching him...being frustrated with him...and praising him. He was better than when he'd started...but a few words still caught him off guard. "Align." M'sey looked at the offending word and pronounced it again. His brown Helmuth had to be the smartest dragon on all Pern. He smiled. Even if he was reading only medical manuals...he was still reading...and he was a big help when M'sey had to be a healer during Falls...He had the "calming" technique of the queen and green dragons almost mastered. "Align the ends...then place splints...at 90 degree angles to eachother...and wrap securely with bandages." How was that? Was Helmuth better this time? M'sey closed the book and set it on the desk beside him as he looked up at his dragon. He'd grown quite a bit...he was now the size of most of the smaller bronze Weyrlings. He smiled again..."Much better. All you need to work on now is eliminating those little hesitations...and except for a few unknown words that you might run into later...you'll be as good at reading as I am." He reached up and scratched the brown's eye ridges and recieved a happy croon in return. Helmuth likes to read. Now you won't have to run back and forth between the patient and the manual. Helmuth can read to you what needs to be done. The dragon told him smugly. He nudged his rider gently, then ambled out of their temporary ground level weyr and into the sun. He settled down on the ground, spreading his wings to help him collect the heat, and laid his head down. After a few minutes he had already dozed off. M'sey watched his dragon enviously. He wished he could just plop down in the sun and take a nap...but he had chores to do. He pushed himself up out of his chair and started out of the weyr. He had patients to check on...and then he had to help in the kitchen. Midori left her place on the shelf and lighted on his shoulder, coiling her tail around his neck. "Hello there." he reached up and rubbed her neck with a finger. She chittered happily. "Going to come with me as I make my rounds?" She bobbed her head in an affirmative. M'sey smiled...Midori was quite a good nurse really. He started to his first patient's weyr wondering how he'd gotten such medically inclined bonds...
