The current symbol for HockeyTown is none other than..... AN OCTOPUS! Why do we have such an odd symbol? Well the meaning goes clear back to years ago , before the modern NHL and the influx of teams. Back then there were only 6 teams in the National Hockey League. The Red Wings were one of those "Original Six" teams. Nowadays the road to the Stanley Cup and winning it requires 4 consecutive rounds a team must win.

But back then it was 8! The Red Wings it is said hung a reminder in the dressing rooms each round they were in of how many more they would need to go through. The seasons I do believe were shorter then as the post seasons were alot longer and alot grittier to play than nowadays. Since an octopus has 8 legs someone came up with the idea to use it as a reminder and since then it has been our city's official "mascot". Reminding us of times long ago when we had to fight harder and longer for the treasured Lord Stanley's Cup.
