In 1860, John & Melina have moved to Booneville in Owsley Co. In 1870 they are back in Harlan with children Caswell T, Noble, and Joseph. They may have returned because of the Civil War. In 1880, they are in Wolfe Co. near Torrent. This fits with buying the timber tract about 1875 and settling on Gladie Creek in Menifee Co.

John & Melina, 90 & 78, were living with son Joseph & wife Belle on 12 June 1900 Census on Gladie Creek, Menifee Co. This calls into question the location of their deaths.

John married Sarah Napier before 1830 in Harlan County, Kentucky. The marriage ended in divorce in 1841.

• William worked as a Hotel Keeper-from census on 22 Jun 1900 in Torrent, Wolfe, Kentucky. The Natural Bridge Park area was opened to the public by the Kentucky Union (KU) Railroad Company about 1888. The only hotel in the area was the L. Park Resort Hotel, managed by Will Ledford, in nearby Torrent, Wolfe County, from which daily excursions ran to the Bridge. In 1894 the Lexington & Eastern RR purchased KU which the L&N then purchased in 1910. L&N sold the Park to the State of Kentucky in 1927. A paved road and hotel was soon built at the Park. The L&N operated through the Park until 1942, when the tracks were removed for the war effort. The L. Park Resort faded from view.

Ballanger Ledford Old Furnace, KY

This 8th Ky. Inft. Vol. has the historic reputation of having taken part in and doing valient service in the following battles in the Civil War.

Laurel Hill, Snow Hill, Dobbins Ferry, Stone River or Murfeesboro, Chicamauga, Buzzard Roost, Whites Ferry, Raccoon Valley and Lookout Mountain and about 200 veterans who reinlisted were transferred to the 4th KY mounted troops and operated in SHERMAN's right wing on his famous MARCH TO THE SEA. Their starting point was Waterloo, Ala. They met frequently with the enemy under Gen. WHEELER, Gen. FOREST, JACKSON, ADAMS and thousands of Georgia cadets, who would take shelter in swamps where the cavalry could not pursue them. On this march they swam the following rivers; Yazoo, Black, Pearl Tuskaloo, Alabama, Coosa, Talapoosa, Chattahochee, Cipsy Flint and Tombgsbee.

Fifty years ago this September, the 8th Reg. Ky. Vol. Infantry rendezvoused at the Estill Springs Camp ground and all members still living and able to do so, are invited to a reunion there in September.

General Notes: One of my earliest memories was visiting "Uncle Joe" and "Aunt Belle" at their home on Gladie Creek in Wolfe County, Ky. This was in the late 1930's. There was a "swinging bridge" across the creek or Red River which captured and dominated my attention, and I can remember it clearly even today. About 80 ft in length and 30 ft or so above the stream, it really did swing. It was well built -steel cables- but would be considered flimsy by today's standards.
Uncle Joe's home was comfortable, clean as a pin, and large for the time & area, perhaps 6 rooms, but was built of hand dressed logs with a wood shingle roof. The road from Nada (Lombard), through the tunnel, was all gravel, but there was a sturdy steel truss, concrete deck, bridge across the river, in the vicinity of Bernie & Scobie Finchs' farm.

She is survived by two sons, one at Smith and one in the West. The funeral was conducted at her home Sunday afternoon. Burial followed in the George Pope Cemetery.

General Notes: Shelby-Shell to his friends-and older brother Will (see) were partners in the sawmill business. Shelby dragged logs with a yoke of oxen past a school house on the way to the mill. The school teacher was a pretty young woman named Belle Steele. Shell made faces at the kids and did whatever he could to disrupt school, which led to a meeting with Belle. Of course they married! Belle was reputed to be the best dancer and prettiest girl in Wolfe County.
Shell and brother John went to Washington state in the late 80's and worked in the timber business. Shell returned in 2 years, but John stayed about 9 years. John had courted Mary Buchanan before but she was preparing her dress to wed a Spurlock gentleman when she saw John ride up. She changed her mind and married John.
Shell was a huge man for the time, about 6'4", with a booming voice to match. He was extremely well read, especially "The Pathfinder" magazine and "The Grit" newspaper, and very prominent in Menifee, Montgomery, Powell and Wolfe Counties. In Winchester, Ky, about 1938, he commented that "the government would have to appropriate $10,000" to operate a nearby corner popcorn stand .
Lore is that Shell was riding from Indian Creek to Frenchburg (3 hours by saddle horse or buggy) and heard a child screaming. As he neared a homestead he saw a woman severely beating a boy about 8 years old. Shell picked up a stick and told the woman if she struck the child again, he would "knock her head off".

Marriage Notes: Belle and Shelby's marriage ended in a fiery disaster the night of 13 January 1923, when their fine home burned to the ground. She perished after reentering the burning structure searching for youngest daughter Gladys, who had earlier been removed to safety by a neighbor.

Shelby soon left Ohio and returned to Indian Creek where he lived out his life.

General Notes: Belle Steele was known as an excellent dancer, and the "prettiest girl in Wolfe County." She raised 9 fine daughters-one son, Clay, died in infancy. Well educated, Belle is known to have attended Hazel Green Academy, for many years the "Athens" of Eastern Kentucky. She also taught school, and was so doing when she married Shelby. The family has made several efforts to obtain records of Belle's academic records at Hazel Green, to no avail. Two major fires at the Academy destroyed many records and perhaps Belle's were among those.
